Rochester, N.Y. – Lucy Covley made the go-ahead basket with 1:33 left as Roberts Wesleyan College rallied for a 63-58 win over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team in non-conference action on Tuesday evening at the Voller Athletic Center.
Sophomore guard
McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) led three Dolphins in double figures with 16 points, while dishing out a game-high six assists. Junior guard
Madison Purcell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) posted 13 points and five rebounds, while senior forward
Joanna Dobrovosky (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) tallied 10 points and seven rebounds.
Covley led the Redhawks offensively with 16 points. Emily Miller was the only other Redhawk in double digits with 12 points, while adding seven rebounds and four assists.
The Dolphins opened the game with the first seven points over the initial 2:30. Senior forward
Courtney Webster (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) made a jumper, Purcell drained a three-pointer and then Dobrovosky converted a lay-up.
After Le Moyne's lead bounced between four and six points over the next five minutes, freshman guard
Gabriella Badway (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and senior forward
Nicole Riddick (Albany, N.Y./Colonie/UMass Lowell) made shots to push Le Moyne's lead to 15-7.
Covley knocked down a three-pointer with 52 seconds left in the quarter to get the Redhawks within 15-10 after the first quarter.
The Dolphins scored eight of the first 10 points of the second quarter to extend their lead to 11. Roberts and Dobrovosky made the shots and then Webster connected on a pair of lay-ups.
Roberts Wesleyan answered with six straight points to get back within five with 3:57 left in the half.
Le Moyne scored seven of the last eight points of the half to take a 30-19 lead into halftime. Purcell hit a three-pointer and then Roberts and Riddick made lay-ups.
The Dolphins pushed their lead to a game-high 14 points with five of the first seven points of the second half. Purcell made two free throws and Roberts answered a Kyla Covington lay-up with a three-pointer for a 35-21 lead with 8:34 to go in the quarter.
The Redhawks scored nine of the next 11 points to get back within seven with 4:51 left. Miller had three of the points over two possessions, while three other players each had two points.
Le Moyne took a pair of 10-point leads over the next two minutes, but the Redhawks made five free throws over the final 2:28 to get within 44-38 after 30 minutes of play. Taya Andrews made three of the free throws, while Sara Nady made the other two.
After Roberts started the scoring in the fourth quarter with a jumper, the Redhawks scored eight straight points and 11 of the next 13 points to take their first lead of the game. Miller made a jumper, Covley drained a three-pointer and then Nady buried back-to-back three-pointers for a 49-48 lead with 5:35 left.
After the teams traded the lead over the next four minutes, Covley gave the Redhawks the lead for good with a jumper with 1:33 left. Miller extended the lead to three with a free throw with 24 seconds left.
Purcell got the Dolphins within one with two free throws with 11 seconds left, but Taylor Bynoe and Nady each made two free throws in the final seconds around a Le Moyne turnover to close out the game's scoring.
Le Moyne (4-5), which has dropped back-to-back games to the Redhawks in Rochester, returns to Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday at the University of New Haven at 1:30 p.m.
