Garden City, N.Y. – Junior guard
Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) scored 24 points to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team, which is ranked first in the NCAA East Region rankings, to an 83-65 victory over Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday night at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
Le Moyne (19-5, 14-4 NE10) clinches a top-two seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Championships and will claim the top seed with a victory in one of the final two games. The Dolphins are back on the court on Saturday hosting Southern Connecticut State at 2:00 p.m.
Sangster recorded 12 points in each half, while adding two assists, two steals and two rebounds. Junior forward
Isaiah Eisendorf (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook/Gannon) registered 17 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, including six on the offensive end. Senior forward
Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) and sophomore guard
C.J. Asuncion-Byrd (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich/St. Thomas More/Gannon) each posted 13 points, while Buczek had six rebounds and Asuncion-Byrd grabbed four.
Michael Coffey led the Panthers in the loss with 25 points, 17 of which came in the first half. Jack Laffey tallied 11 of his 17 points in the second half, while Chris Millender recorded 11 points and four rebounds.
After Millender and Coffey opened the game with lay-ups around a jumper by Eisendorf, the Dolphins rattled off 11 of the next 12 points over a span of 2:04. Sangster had six of the points and Asuncion-Byrd tallied the other five.
Following four points from each team, the Panthers got three-pointers from Coffey and Manny Suarez to get within two with 12:37 left in the half.
The teams split the next 10 points before the Dolphins put together an 8-3 run to push its lead back to seven. Eisendorf scored the first four points before junior guard
Tyree Chambers (Bayreuth, Germany/Graf-Münster Gymnasium/Providence) and junior forward
Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden/Gannon) added jumpers.
After a 5-0 run by the Panthers and a 6-0 counter by the Dolphins, Adelphi tallied seven straight to get within one, 36-35, with 2:12 left in the half. Coffey scored five of the points with Suarez adding two free throws.
Sangster closed out the scoring in the half with a pair of jump shots to give the Dolphins a 40-35 lead at the intermission.
Following a 5-0 spurt by the Panthers to get within 42-40 with 18:38 left in the game, the Dolphins ran off 10 straight points and 16 of the next 18 to pull away. Sangster and Buczek each had six points in the streak, while Eisendorf added two lay-ups and junior guard
Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) started the jaunt with a lay-up.
After the Panthers got within 16 on three occasions over the next three and one-half minutes, the last of which came with 9:34 remaining, the Dolphins scored 10 straight points to take their largest lead of the game, 77-51, with 6:27 left. Chambers and Sangster scored two points each before Asuncion-Byrd drilled back-to-back three-pointers.
Adelphi scored eight of the last 10 points to deliver the final margin. Coffey and Millender each had four of the points.
