DeWitt, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College men's tennis team opened the Spring season with a 6-3 victory over Daemen College on Saturday evening at Gold's Gym.
The Dolphins opened the day by taking two of the three matches in the doubles competition. At the top spot, freshman
Philip Blythe (Edinburgh, Scotland/Merchiston) and junior
Hallam Doney (Andover, Hampshire/Peter Symonds) teamed for an 8-2 win over David Gonzalez Villegas and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez. Senior
James Gayvert (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and sophomore
Tyler Underwood (Minoa, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) defeated Justin Milner and Andrew LeMar at the third position, 8-6. The Wildcats earned their first point at the second spot as Mark Veitengruber and Fabian Wilde edged freshman
Josh Sagaille (Schenectady, N.Y./Justine Henin Academy (Belgium)) and junior
Jason Barton (Lima, Ohio/Shawnee), 9-7.
The Dolphins captured four of the singles matches to claim the match. In his collegiate debut, Blythe defeated Gonzalez Villegas at the first position, 6-1, 6-2. Gayvert improved to 3-1 on the season with back-to-back scores of 6-4 against Ruiz Martinez. Doney registered his fourth straight win by rallying for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Veitengruber at the third spot. Senior
Steven Procopio (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) topped Adam Kerr at the sixth position, 7-6 (10-7), 6-2. Wilde won against Sagaille at the fourth spot, 6-2, 6-1, while Milner rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 10-3 win over Barton at number five.
Le Moyne (3-1) is back in action on Sunday morning with an NE10 match against Saint Michael's College at Gold's Gym.
