20TH-RANKED MEN’S BASKETBALL EDGED BY SAINT ANSELM, 71-68, IN NORTHEAST-10 SEMIFINALS

Syracuse, N.Y. – Tim Guers nailed a three-pointer with 1:07 remaining to give second-seeded Saint Anselm College a 71-68 victory over the 20th-ranked and top-seeded Le Moyne College men's basketball team in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships semifinals on Wednesday night at Ted Grant Court.

Saint Anselm, which has won 13 of its last 15 games, advances to the conference title game for the 12th time in 34 NE10 Championships appearances. The Hawks, who have won a league-best seven championships, will visit cross-town rival Southern New Hampshire on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The match-up will be the first time the Manchester-based teams will battle for the conference title.

Le Moyne, which had its eight-game win streak snapped and dips to 22-6 on the season, now awaits word of an NCAA Championships berth. The NCAA will announce the 64-team field on Sunday at 10:30 p.m. on NCAA.com, with each of the eight number one seeds announced an hour earlier. For the third straight week, the Dolphins were ranked first in the East Region rankings that were released earlier in the day.

The Dolphins had five players finish in double digits. Junior guard Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) and junior forward Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden/Gannon) each tallied 14 points off the bench, while Kaigler grabbed five rebounds. Junior guard Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) and junior forward Isaiah Eisendorf (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook/Gannon) each recorded 11 points, while Sangster pulled down six rebounds and Eisendorf grabbed five. Sophomore guard C.J. Asuncion-Byrd (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich/St. Thomas More/Gannon) scored 10 points, eight of which came in the first half.

Three of the six Hawks to play in the game registered at least 15 points. Guers finished with 21 points, including 13 in the second half, and turned in six assists and five rebounds. Cody Ball also scored 21 points, 12 of which came in the first half. Harrison Taggart recorded 15 points, including 10 in the second half, and collected five rebounds.

The Dolphins opened the game with the first 10 points over the beginning 2:21. Asuncion-Byrd drained a three-pointer 16 seconds into the game and then Eisendorf followed with a three-pointer, a jumper and a lay-up.

After the teams exchanged points over a span of 1:14, which resulted in a 17-8 Le Moyne lead with 13:54 left in the first half, the Hawks used a 12-4 to get within one point with 11:05 to go. Chris Braley started the run with a conventional three-point play and then Ball scored seven points around a jumper by Taggart.

Kaigler and Sangster answered with jumpers and Hyland made a free throw to push Le Moyne's lead back six with 8:39 left in the half and the Dolphins still led by four at the 3:48 media timeout.

The Hawks closed out the half with eight of the last 11 points to take a 37-36 lead into the intermission. Guers made two foul shots, Taggart buried a three-pointer, Taylor Fortin made a free throw and then Braley answered a Hyland three-pointer with a lay-up for the final points of the half.

Saint Anselm scored 16 of the first 25 points of the second half to open up a game-high eight-point lead with 14:20 left in the game. Taggart and Guers each made a three-pointer and a lay-up in the span, while Ball scored the last four points of the run.

Following a conventional three-point play by Guers with 11:47 left to give the Hawks a 56-49 lead, the Dolphins scored 11 of the next 13 points to take the lead. Kaigler scored six of the 11 points, including a fast-break lay-up off a steal to give Le Moyne a 60-58 lead with 7:04 to play.

Saint Anselm answered with five straight points to take the lead back. Ball tied the score with a jumper and then Taggart buried a three-pointer with 5:54 to go.

Kaigler had a put-back lay-up on Le Moyne's next possession and Sangster followed 2:42 later with a lay-up to give the Dolphins a 64-63 lead.

Ball drained a three-pointer to put the Hawks back in front with 2:31 left, but Hyland answered with a lay-up 21 seconds later to knot the score at 66. Guers countered 22 seconds later, while Kaigler responded with a jumper in the paint to tie the score at 68 with 1:22 remaining.

Guers followed with a three-pointer from the left off a feed from Fortin to give his team the lead for good.

The Dolphins turned the ball over on their next possession, but Fortin missed a three-pointer with 22 seconds to play and senior forward Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) came down with the rebound. Following a Le Moyne timeout with 15 seconds left, Hyland was able to get off a three-pointer from the left wing, but it fell short and time expired.
