Brian Rogers (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) tallied five points to lead the top-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team to an 8-4 win over 13th-ranked Mercy College on Saturday in non-conference action at Mercy Field.
The Dolphins opened the game with the first four goals. Rogers got the scoring started with his fifth goal of the season at the 8:24 mark off a pass from junior attackman
Justin Kesselring (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport). Three and one-half minutes later, freshman attackman
Sean Emerson (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy) gave the Dolphins a 2-0 lead with an unassisted goal. Rogers completed the scoring in the first quarter with 12 seconds left after collecting another pass from Kesselring. Just over three minutes into the second quarter, Emerson netted his 11th goal of the campaign after taking a feed from Rogers.
The Mavericks responded with the next two goals to cut their deficit in half. Ryan MacSpadyen got his team on the scoreboard with 9:02 left in the half off a pass from Kevin McNally. Chris Martinez followed with his eighth goal of the year with 4:11 remaining in the period following a feed from Tommy McPartland in an extra-man situation.
The teams traded goals in the third quarter as the Dolphins pushed their lead back to three on a pair of occasions. Rogers started the stretch with the game-winning goal, an unassisted tally, at the 11:38 mark. Nick Wilcox pulled the Mavericks back within two eight minutes later. Junior midfielder
Tom Koster (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/Onondaga C.C.) extended the lead back to three with an unassisted marker with 2:04 to play in the third.
Le Moyne scored twice in the first 2:34 of the fourth quarter to take its largest lead of the game. Freshman attackman
Riley Larson (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe) netted his first career goal with 13:19 remaining in the contest. Emerson followed 53 seconds later with an extra-man goal off a feed from Rogers.
Wilcox finished off the game's scoring with 9:33 remaining.
Junior goalkeeper
Jack Sweeney (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Onondaga C.C.) registered six saves (against three goals) over 57:54 between the pipes to earn his fifth win of the year. Ryan Gibbons made seven saves in the loss for the Mavericks.
Le Moyne (5-0) is back in action on Saturday at third-ranked Merrimack College at 1:00 p.m.
