Yaphank, N.Y. – Sophomore shortstop
Josiah Gray (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) blasted a grand slam and then picked up the save to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 5-2 win over 23rd-ranked LIU Post in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Baseball Heaven. The Pioneers took the opener, 3-1.
The Pioneers started the scoring in game two with a pair of runs in the first inning. After shortstop Jimmy Mendyk singled with one out, left fielder Kenny Daley launched a home run to center field.
Le Moyne took the lead in the fourth inning with four runs on three hits. Sophomore first baseman
Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a walk by sophomore catcher
Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington). Junior left fielder
JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) then reached on a bunt single in front of the plate to load the bases. After back-to-back strikeouts, Gray drilled a grand slam over the fence in left field to give the Dolphins a 4-2 lead.
Freshman second baseman
Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) tacked on a run in the top of the sixth by smacking a home run to left field to lead off the inning.
After second baseman Matt Bowers and center fielder Rob Andreoli singled to start the seventh inning, Gray moved from shortstop to the mound. He got Mendyk to pop out for the first out of the inning, but then hit Daley to load the bases. Gray then struck out the next two batters to close out the victory.
Graduate student righty
Sean Pisik (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Ursinus) improved to 4-0 on the season after striking out three over six-plus innings, while yielding two runs and eight hits. Pittman and junior right fielder
Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) each had two of Le Moyne's 10 hits. Noah Lorenzo took the loss for the Pioneers after allowing five runs over five innings.
In the first game, LIU Post struck for two runs on two hits in the fourth inning. Right fielder Dave Brehm walked with one out, stole second and then scored on a single through the right side by catcher Thomas Asbaty. After Asbaty stole second, he came around to score on a single down the left field line by designated hitter Joe Piscitelli.
The Dolphins cut their deficit in half in the sixth with a run on two hits. Cox led off with single up the middle and then stole second on a strikeout. Spinoso then doubled to right center to knock in Cox.
LIU Post got the run back in the bottom of the sixth. First baseman Anthony Vaglica walked on eight pitches to open the frame and moved to second on a single to left center by Brehm. Following a pair of groundouts, third baseman Michael Greene was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Second baseman Sal Geraci was hit by a pitch three pitches later to force home Vaglica.
Senior righty
Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) dropped his second decision of the year after yielding three runs and four hits over five and two-thirds innings, while striking out seven. Cox tallied two of Le Moyne's six hits in the game. Jake DeCarli struck out 10 batters en route to earning his second win of the season after scattering six hits over seven innings.
Le Moyne (9-6) and the Pioneers play another doubleheader on Sunday at Baseball Heaven starting at 10:00 a.m.
