24TH-RANKED BASEBALL SPLITS WITH MERCY, 1-3, 13-3

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – Junior right fielder/first baseman Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) went 3-for-3 and scored four runs to lead the 24th-ranked Le Moyne College baseball team to a 13-3 victory over Mercy College in the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday at Mercy Field. The Mavericks defeated the Dolphins in the first game of the day, 3-1.

The Dolphins, who are ranked nationally for the first time since the February 12, 2013 poll, scored in each of the first six innings of game two. They started their scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning on two hits. Cox led off with a double down the right field line and redshirt sophomore third baseman Ben Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) followed with a single to center. Following a sacrifice bunt and a walk by sophomore first baseman Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) to load the bases, Cox raced home on a passed ball. Junior left fielder JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Walsh.

Le Moyne added three runs on two hits and one error in the second inning. Redshirt senior center fielder Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant) drew a walk with one out, moved to second on a single to left by freshman second baseman Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and took third when Cox was hit by a pitch. Walsh then lifted a sac fly to right to plate Martin. Sophomore designated hitter/catcher Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) followed with a single up the middle to drive in Jacques, while Cox scored on an error by the center fielder.

The Dolphins added two more runs in the third on two hits. Pittman led off with a walk and then stole second base. After an out, Martin doubled to center to drive in Pittman. Jacques then tripled down the left field line to plate Martin.

In the fourth, Spinoso led off with a double to left, took third on a single by junior right fielder Timothy Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and then scored on a sac fly by Pittman.

The Dolphins extended their lead to 11-0 in the fifth inning. Cox led off with a single to right, stole second and took third on a wild pitch. After Spinoso walked to load the bases, Corapi singled to left center to drive in Cox. Pittman followed with a groundout to the first baseman to plate Walsh, who walked to reach base. Following a walk to load the bases again, sophomore shortstop Josiah Gray (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) grounded out to the first baseman to knock in Spinoso.

Le Moyne completed its scoring in the sixth inning with two runs on two hits. Cox singled to second with one out, took second on a wild pitch and came around to score on a triple to center by Walsh. A wild pitch then allowed Walsh to come home.

Mercy cut into its deficit with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth. Shortstop John Mooradian led off with a ground-rule double to left field and moved to third on a one-out single by pinch-hitter John Young. Right fielder Charles Fina then singled up the middle to plate Mooradian, while Young scored on a double to left by second baseman Tim Gesualdi. Fina then scored on a groundout by pinch-hitter Randal Mendez.

Redshirt sophomore Max Tessitore (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) struck out seven over five scoreless innings, while scattering two hits and one walk, to earn his second win of the season. In addition to Cox's three-hit game, Walsh, Spinoso, Corapi and Jacques each had two hits. Paul Hansut took the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) and four hits over two innings.

In game one, Mercy scored all three of its runs in the first inning. Mooradian and Sadallah walked and Murphy singled to start the inning. Mooradian then scored as Fina reached on a fielder's choice. Sadallah then raced home as Fina was caught attempting to steal second. Mendez followed with a solo home run to left field.

The Dolphins pushed across one run in the third inning without getting a hit. Jacques walked with one out, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored as Walsh reached on a throwing error by the third baseman.

Le Moyne loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth inning, but the next batter flied out to right field to end the frame.

Freshman Chase Borowitz (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay) suffered his first career loss after yielding three runs and four hits over six innings, while striking out two. Matt Nalbone earned the win for the Mavericks after tossing two scoreless innings. Matteo Finocchi earned a save after retiring all three batters he faced.

Le Moyne (12-7) opens Northeast-10 Conference action with a doubleheader on Saturday at Franklin Pierce University at 2:30 p.m. The Dolphins will be the home team for each contest after the doubleheader was moved to Rindge, N.H. due to the aftermath of Winter Storm Stella.
