Philadelphia, Pa. – Senior center fielder
Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh as the Le Moyne College baseball team defeated Philadelphia University, 6-4, in the second game of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Rams took the opener, 5-2.
The Dolphins started the scoring in the nightcap with two runs on three hits in the second inning. Junior left fielder
JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) tripled to center with one out and scored on a two-out double to left by sophomore shortstop/pitcher
Josiah Gray (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle). Freshman second baseman
Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) followed with a single to left to knock in Gray.
Philadelphia answered with one run in the bottom of the inning on out hit and a Le Moyne error. Left fielder Michael Melendez led off with a double to right field and moved to third on a throwing error by the shortstop on a fly out. Two batters later, Melendez scored on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Matt McGee.
Le Moyne regained its two-run lead in the top of the third on one hit and one error. Senior catcher
Gabe Levanti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Northeastern) reached second on a throwing error by the shortstop to start the inning. Following a pair of fly outs, sophomore designated hitter/third baseman
Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) singled up the middle to drive in Levanti.
The Dolphins pushed their lead to 4-1 in the fourth. Pittman walked to start the frame, advanced to third on a single to center by redshirt sophomore infielder
Ben Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) and then scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Gray.
The Rams took advantage of two Le Moyne errors in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score at four. Melendez led off with a walk and moved to second on a single by shortstop David McTaggart. On a throwing error by the shortstop as right fielder Dan Klusman reached on a fielder's choice, Melendez scored. After a walk by McGee and a steal of third on the fourth ball by Klusman, McGee stole second on a strikeout, while Klusman raced home on a throwing error by the catcher. Center fielder Richard Joa then singled up the middle to knock in McGee.
Following a pair of scoreless innings, the Dolphins scored twice in the top of the seventh to take the lead back. DiNorcia walked with one out, stole second and then took third on a passed ball. Following a walk by Levanti to put runners on the corners, junior right fielder
Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) recorded a sacrifice bunt to drive in DiNorcia. Sophomore first baseman
Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) followed with a double to left field to plate Levanti with an insurance run.
The Rams put the tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh, but Gray retired the final two batters he faced to end the game.
Junior southpaw
Cody Barnes (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) earned his first win of the season by tossing one and one-third scoreless innings out of the bullpen, while striking out one. Gray struck out one in the seventh to pick up his fourth save of the year. Cox and Pittman each registered two hits in the contest. Gunnar Hayes took the loss for the Rams after giving up two runs (one earned) in one inning of work.
In the opener, the Dolphins also scored a pair of runs in the second inning. Pittman reached second on an error by the shortstop to begin the frame. Walsh followed with a single to left center to knock in Pittman. After redshirt senior right fielder
Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant) reached on a fielding error by the third baseman that moved Walsh to third, junior center fielder
Timothy Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) lifted a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Walsh.
Philadelphia took the lead in the bottom of the second with three runs on five hits. First baseman Steven Wells led off with a single to right field and moved to second on a one-out single by McTaggart. Following a single by second baseman Timothy Brodhag to load the bases and a strikeout, Klusman singled to left field to knock in Wells and McTaggart. Joa followed with single to knock in Brodhag.
The Rams scored a pair of runs in the sixth on one hit. After left fielder/pitcher Brandon Quaranta walked and took second on a passed ball to start the inning, Wells blasted a home run to right field.
Junior righty
Alex Kubera (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk/Niagara C.C.) suffered his first loss as a Dolphin after yielding five runs on eight hits over six innings, while striking out six. Casey O'Donnell earned the win after allowing just two unearned runs on three hits over six innings, while striking out seven. Quaranta earned the save by tossing the scoreless seven inning.
Le Moyne (8-4) is back in action on Thursday at Shippensburg University at 2:30 p.m. The start of the three-game series with the Raiders was moved up a day to avoid expected inclement weather on Saturday and Sunday.
