Garden City, N.Y. – Second baseman Nicole Camera hit a go-ahead home run in the first game and third baseman Brenna Martini went 3-for-3 in the nightcap to lead 23rd-ranked Adelphi University to a sweep of the Le Moyne College softball team in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Janet L. Ficke Field. The Panthers rallied for a 3-2 win in the opener and took game two, 9-3.
The Dolphins got the day's scoring started just two batters into the game. Senior shortstop
Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) led off the game with a triple to right center and then scored on a groundout by freshman catcher
Ally Nicolosi (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn).
Le Moyne added to its lead in the third inning with a run on two hits. Nicolosi singled to center field with two outs and came around to score on a double to right center by senior center fielder
Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park).
Adelphi started its comeback with one run in the third inning. Left fielder Elisabeth Berard was hit by a pitch with one out, stole second, took third on a single to left center by center fielder Krista King and then scored on a groundout by catcher/left fielder Nicoletta Cuccio.
The Panthers took the lead in the sixth inning with two runs. After Cuccio led off with a bunt single, Camera launched a home run to left center for a 3-2 lead.
Junior
Alexis Eastman (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) took the loss after yielding three runs and four hits over six innings, while striking out three. Nicolosi finished the contest with three of Le Moyne's eight hits. Lindsay Mapes earned the win after striking out six, while scattering eight hits.
The Dolphins opened the scoring in the second game with one run on one hit and an Adelphi error in the second inning. Freshman pitcher
Peyton Bellrose (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) reached on an error by the second baseman to start the inning. After moving to second on a single and third on a sacrifice bunt, Bellrose scored on a groundout by senior catcher
Emily Bagley (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster).
Adelphi responded with three runs on four hits and one Le Moyne error in the bottom of the second. Designated player Lauren Sandelier led off with a single through the left side and moved to second on a groundout. After right fielder Stephanie Staiano singled to third base to put runners at the corners, first baseman Emily Turney singled to first base to drive in Sandelier, while Staiano was also able to score on the play. Shortstop Kaila Konkel then doubled to left field to knock in Turney.
Le Moyne got one of the runs back in the top of the third. Case drew a walk with one out, moved to second on a groundout and came around to score on a single to left center by Riley.
The Panthers extended their lead to 6-2 in the fourth with three runs. After King and Cuccio had back-to-back two-out singles, Martini launched her conference-best 11th home run of the season over the fence down the left field line.
The Dolphins cut their deficit to 6-3 in the top of the fifth on a pair of doubles. Case led off with a double down the left field line and scored on a two-out double to left center by Bellrose.
Adelphi completed the game's scoring with three runs on three hits in the sixth inning. Konkel led off with a single to left field, took second on a groundout and scored on a double to center by Cuccio. After Martini was intentionally walked, she was retired at second as Camera reached on a fielder's choice, while Cuccio was able to score on the play. Sandelier then singled to right field to drive in Camera.
Bellrose suffered her second loss of the season in the circle after yielding nine runs, while striking out one. Kristin Fealy earned the win after striking out five over seven innings, while giving up three runs (two earned) and six hits.
Le Moyne (17-8, 1-2 NE10, 1-2 SW) is scheduled to host American International College on Wednesday in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
