Pleasantville, N.Y. – Senior
Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) tossed eight scoreless innings to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 1-0 win over Pace University in the first game of a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Finnerty Field. The Setters took the nightcap, 9-7.
Following six scoreless innings to start the first game, the Dolphins used two hits to score the only run of the contest. Senior catcher/third baseman
Gabe Levanti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Northeastern) singled through the left side with one out and advanced to third on a ground-rule double down the left field line by sophomore shortstop/pitcher
Josiah Gray (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle). Redshirt senior right fielder
Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant) then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to knock in Levanti.
The Setters advanced a runner to third with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but Powers induced a fly out to end the frame.
Powers struck out six en route to recording his fourth straight victory, while yielding just three hits. Gray retired three of the four batters he faced to pick up his ninth save of the year. Ryan Aquino took the loss for the Setters after allowing just one run and five hits over eight innings.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins struck for a run in the top of the second inning to start the game's scoring. Junior left fielder/pitcher
JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) drew a six-pitch walk with one out and moved to second on a ground out. Gray then singled to left center to drive in Pittman.
Pace responded with seven runs on four hits and a Le Moyne error in the bottom of the second. First baseman/left fielder Michael Gulino led off with a single to right field and moved to third as right fielder Cory Capaldi reached on a fielding error by the third baseman. After a strikeout and a hit batter to load the bases, second baseman Riley Iafrate walked to force in Gulino. Designated hitter James Wynne then singled through the right side to plate Capaldi and catcher Frank Mayo. Center fielder John Kukura followed with a double to center to drive in Iafrate and Wynne and force a Le Moyne pitching change. Following a walk by shortstop Michael Salmonese and a fly out, Gulino tripled to right center to knock home Kukura and Salmonese.
The Dolphins got three of the runs back in the third on two hits and a Pace error. Junior center fielder
Timothy Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) drew a walk to open the frame and advanced to third as junior first baseman
Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) reached on a throwing error by the second baseman. After a pop out, sophomore third baseman/catcher
Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) singled up the middle to drive in Corapi. Sophomore designated hitter
Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) followed with a double to left center to plate Cox and Spinoso.
The Setters pushed their lead to four in the bottom of the third with one hit and two Le Moyne errors. Mayo led off with a single through the left side, took second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third as Wynne reached on a throwing error by the third baseman. After the inning's second out, Salmonese reached on a throwing error by the third baseman, which allowed Mayo to score.
Pace added another run in the bottom of the fourth. Gulino led off with a single to the shortstop and took second on a wild pitch. After a walk by Capaldi and two outs, the second of which was Gulino being forced at third, Iafrate singled to center to drive in Capaldi.
Le Moyne got the run back in the top of the fifth without getting a hit. Cox walked to start the frame, Spinoso was hit by a pitch with one out and Place followed by drawing a walk to load the bases. Pittman then worked a six-pitch walk to force in Cox and force a pitching change. The new pitcher, Michael Amato, induced a double play on his second pitch to get out of the inning.
The Dolphins scored another run in the seventh inning, but left the bases loaded for the second time in three innings. Spinoso walked to open the inning and Pittman doubled to right center with one out to move Spinoso to third. After Levanti was hit by a pitch to load the bases and a strikeout, Martin singled to the shortstop to drive in Spinoso.
Le Moyne pulled within two with a run in the eighth on three hits. Redshirt sophomore second baseman/shortstop
Ben Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) and Spinoso recorded back-to-back singles with one out. After a pitching change and a strikeout, Pittman singled through the right side to plate Walsh.
Graduate student righty
Sean Pisik (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee/Ursinus) took the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) over just one and one-third innings of work. Spinoso, Pittman and Gray each had two of Le Moyne's nine hits in the game. Kevin Wiltse earned the win out of the bullpen for the Setters after tossing two hitless innings, while allowing one run. Anthony Criscione earned his second save of the season by getting the final five outs.
