Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) had four hits to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 9-7 win over Pace University in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action on Sunday afternoon at Finnerty Field.
The Dolphins opened the game's scoring with a run in the third inning. Redshirt senior right fielder
Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant) drew a walk to start the frame, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then stole third. Martin then scored on a double play.
Pace evened the score in the bottom of the fourth. Designated hitter/pitcher James Wynne doubled down the left field line with two outs, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single through the left side by catcher Frank Mayo.
Le Moyne regained the lead in the fifth with a run on two hits. Senior center fielder
Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) singled up the middle with one out and advanced to third on a single to right center by Cox. After a walk to load the bases, DiNorcia scored on a wild pitch.
The Setters tied the score again in the fifth. Center fielder John Kukura was hit by a pitch to start the frame, moved to second on a sac bunt, took third on a groundout and scored on a single through the left side by right fielder Cory Capaldi.
Le Moyne answered with four runs on two hits in the sixth. Senior catcher
Gabe Levanti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Northeastern) reached on a bunt single with one out and moved to second on a walk by sophomore shortstop/pitcher
Josiah Gray (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle). After a fly out and a walk by DiNorcia to load the bases, Cox singled to right field to drive in Levanti and Gray and force a pitching change. Following a walk by redshirt sophomore second baseman/pitcher/shortstop
Ben Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) to load the bases again, sophomore third baseman
Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) and sophomore designated hitter
Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) drew back-to-back walks to force in DiNorcia and Cox, respectively.
Pace countered with five runs on four hits and one Le Moyne error in the bottom of the sixth to take its only lead of the game. Wynne walked to start the frame and Mayo followed with a single through the left side. After second baseman Riley Iafrate reached on a throwing error by the catcher on a sac bunt attempt to load the bases, Kukura singled through the left side to drive in Wynne and force a pitching change. Shortstop Michael Salmonese greeted the new pitcher with a single to left center to plate Mayo. Following a pair of outs through the air, Capaldi was hit by a pitch to force in Iafrate. Left fielder Domenick Luongo then singled up the middle to drive in Kukura and Salmonese with the go-ahead run.
The Dolphins regained the lead in the top of the eighth inning with three runs on three hits and one Pace error. Cox led off with a bunt single to the first baseman and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Walsh. After Spinoso walked, Place singled through the right side to knock in Cox with the tying run. After a pop out, Levanti singled through the right side to place Spinoso, while freshman pinch-runner
Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) scored on a throwing error by the right fielder.
Junior southpaw
Cody Barnes (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) earned his second win of the season out of the bullpen after striking out two over two innings. Walsh retired all three batters he faced in the eighth, including two via strikeouts, and Gray set down the Setters in order in the ninth to earn his NE10-best 10th save of the season. Gray is just the third Dolphin (fourth occurrence) to record at least 10 saves in a season in the program's history. In addition to Cox's four-hit performance, Levanti had three hits and Place and DiNorcia each had two hits. Michael Amato took the loss for the Setters after giving up three runs (two earned) in one inning of work.
Le Moyne (24-12, 11-4 NE10, 8-3 SW), which took two of three games from the Setters for just the second time in six years in the NE10, returns home to conclude its three-game series with The College of Saint Rose on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
