BASEBALL SWEEPS AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL, 7-0, 9-5

Springfield, Mass. – Graduate student righty Sean Pisik (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Ursinus) tossed eight scoreless innings in the opener and junior right fielder Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) had a go-ahead single in the nightcap as the Le Moyne College baseball team swept American International College in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Bedard Field. The Dolphins won the opener, 7-0, and posted a 9-5 victory in the nightcap.

The Dolphins scored the only runs they would need in the opening game in the top of the second inning. Senior third baseman/catcher Gabe Levanti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Northeastern) led off the frame with a home run to left field on the first pitch. Sophomore designated hitter David DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) followed with a single to right center, took second on a groundout and moved to third on a passed ball. After the second out of the inning, Cox reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, which allowed DiNorcia to score.

Le Moyne added a run in the sixth on two hits. Sophomore shortstop Josiah Gray (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) led off with a triple to left field and scored on a one-out double down the right field line by Cox.

The Dolphins doubled their lead in the seventh inning. Sophomore first baseman Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) led off with a single through the left side and then junior left fielder JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) singled through the right side to force a pitching change. Following a pair of outs, Gray blasted his team high-tying third home run of the season over the fence in left center for a 6-0 lead.

Le Moyne finished off its scoring with one run in the eighth inning. Sophomore catcher/third baseman Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) drew a walk to start the frame and then took second on a wild pitch. After moving to third on a single to center by Place, Spinoso scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Pittman.

Pisik improved to a conference-best 6-0 after striking out six over eight scoreless innings, while scattering three hits. Place registered three of Le Moyne's 12 hits, while Levanti, Gray and junior center fielder Timothy Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) each had two hits. Ryan Bruning took the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) and nine hits over six-plus innings.

The Dolphins started the scoring in the nightcap with one run in the first inning. Cox singled through the left side, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and then scored on a groundout by Spinoso with one out.

Le Moyne extended its lead to 4-0 in the second with three runs on four hits. Pittman led off with a double to left center and came around to score on a double down the right field line by Levanti. After Levanti took third on a passed ball, he scored on a single through the left side by DiNorcia. Following a single by Gray to move DiNorcia to third, Corapi recorded a sacrifice bunt to plate DiNorcia.

American International countered with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Second baseman Brendan Carter walked with one out, stole second, stole third and then scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Center fielder Josh Aviles walked and third baseman K.J. White followed with a single down the left field line. After a pop out, left fielder Matt Krause doubled to left center to plate Aviles and White.

The Yellow Jackets took their first lead of the series in the fifth inning. After first baseman Chris Starcun singled through the right side with one out, Krause smacked a two-run homer down the left field line.

Le Moyne regained the lead in the sixth with two runs on two hits. Levanti was hit by a pitch with one out and advanced to second on a single to right by DiNorcia. After a pitching change and a fly out, Corapi drew a walk to load the bases. Cox then singled to left center to drive in Levanti and DiNorcia.

The Dolphins tacked on one run in the seventh. Pittman walked with two outs and came around to score on a double down the left field line by Levanti.

Le Moyne added two insurance runs in the eighth on one hit and an error by the Yellow Jackets. Corapi was hit by a pitch to start the frame and advanced to third on a one-out double down the right field line by redshirt sophomore second baseman Ben Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill). After Corapi was retired at home as Spinoso reached on a fielder's choice, Place reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, which allowed Walsh and Spinoso to score the final runs of the day.

Junior reliever Alex Kubera (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk/Niagara C.C.) picked up his fifth victory of the season after tossing four and two-thirds scoreless innings out of the bullpen, while striking out five and allowing just one hit. Cox and DiNorcia each had three hits in the game, while Levanti posted two hits. Matt Costanza took the loss after giving up six runs and eight hits over five and one-third innings pitched.

Le Moyne (16-8, 4-1 NE10, 3-0 SW), which is ranked third in this week's NCBWA East Region rankings, returns to the diamond on Thursday at The College of Saint Rose at 3:30 p.m. The non-conference matchup with East Stroudsburg University scheduled for Tuesday at Dick Rockwell Field has been cancelled due to expected inclement weather.
