BASEBALL BLANKS SAINT ROSE IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP, 4-0, 1-0

Albany, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College baseball team recorded a pair of shutouts in a sweep of The College of Saint Rose in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Bob Bellizzi Field. The Dolphins took the opener, 4-0, and edged the Golden Knights in the nightcap, 1-0, in 12 innings.

In the opener, the Dolphins scored the only runs they would need in the fourth inning on a pair of hits. Sophomore third baseman/catcher Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) drew a walk to start the inning and moved to second on a single to center by sophomore first baseman Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda). After a balk moved the runners up a base and a strikeout, senior catcher/third baseman Gabe Levanti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Northeastern) doubled to right center to knock in Spinoso and Place.

Le Moyne (18-8, 6-1 NE10, 5-0 SW) tacked on two runs in the fifth on two hits and a Saint Rose error. Redshirt sophomore second baseman/shortstop Ben Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) drew a walk with two out and advanced to second on a single to center by Spinoso. Place then singled to right field to drive in Walsh. After a strikeout, Levanti reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, which allowed Spinoso to score.

Senior righty Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) earned his second straight win after striking out nine over eight innings and scattering seven hits. By striking out the second batter of the game, Powers moved past Brian Mattoon '03 for second on the program's all-time strikeout chart with his 241st. Dominic Razzano took the loss for the Golden Knights after allowing four runs (three earned) over five and two-thirds innings, while striking out eight.

In the nightcap, each team advanced a runner to third base with one out during regulation, but could not push a run across. It happened for the Dolphins in the fifth inning, while the Golden Knights loaded the bases in the seventh, but the next two batters made outs.

Saint Rose (1-18, 0-6 NE10, 0-4 SW) advanced a runner to third with one out in the 10th following an error by the Dolphins, but the next batter popped out to the third baseman and the following batter struck out swinging.

After the Golden Knights left two runners on base in the 11th, the Dolphins scored the game-winning run in the top of the 12th. Redshirt senior designated hitter Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant) singled through the right side to open the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After junior right fielder Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) singled to left and Walsh walked to load the bases, Spinoso was hit by an 0-2 pitch, which forced home Martin.

Junior righty Alex Kubera (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk/Niagara C.C.) earned his sixth win of the season after tossing two scoreless relief innings, while striking out two. Sophomore shortstop/closer Josiah Gray (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) earned his conference-best seventh save of the season after retiring three of the four batters he faced, including two via strikeouts. Graduate student righty Sean Pisik (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee/Ursinus) extended his scoreless streak to 21 innings after striking out a season-best 11 and scattering five hits over nine scoreless innings, but did not factor into the decision for the first time as a Dolphin. Joe Pokrentowski suffered the loss after yielding one run in three and one-third innings out of the bullpen, while striking out six.

Le Moyne is back on the diamond on Sunday at Stonehill College for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
