NEW HAVEN SWEEPS BASEBALL, 5-0, 2-1

West Haven, Conn. – Third baseman Jack Zagaja drove in four runs to lead the University of New Haven to a sweep of the Le Moyne College baseball team in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field. The Chargers took the opener, 5-0, and held on for a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

The Chargers scored the only runs they would need in the opener in the first inning. For the second day in a row, center fielder Matt Chamberlain drew a walk to start the frame. After an out, left fielder Robert Petrillo reached on a fielding error by the second baseman. Chamberlain was then picked off second, but right fielder Nick Perrelli followed with a single to right to put runners on the corners. Zagaja then homered to left field to make the score 3-0.

New Haven added two runs on two hits and one error in the sixth. Petrillo led off with a single to center and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Zagaja walked, he and Petrillo recorded stolen bases, with Petrillo scoring on a throwing error by the catcher. Designated hitter Joe Caico then singled to right field to drive in Zagaja.

Tim Kennedy improved to 5-0 on the year after striking out eight over seven scoreless innings, while allowing just four hits. Junior Alex Kubera (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk/Niagara C.C.) suffered the loss after yielding five runs (two earned) over eight innings.

In the nightcap, New Haven scored both of its runs in the third inning on three hits. Chamberlain led off with a walk and took second on a passed ball. After shortstop Tom Walraven reached on a bunt single to move Chamberlain to third, Chamberlain scored as Petrillo reached on a fielder's choice. Following a single by Perrelli, Zagaja doubled to drive in Petrillo.

Le Moyne got on the scoreboard in the sixth with one hit. Redshirt sophomore second baseman Ben Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) drew a walk to start the inning, advanced to second on a single to left field by sophomore catcher Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) and took third on a fly out. Walsh then scored on a groundout by junior left fielder JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy).

Vincent Aprea earned the win for the Chargers after striking out five over six innings, while allowing one run and two hits. Sophomore Sam Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) took the loss for the Dolphins after yielding two runs on five hits over eight innings, while striking out five.

Le Moyne (25-15, 12-7 NE10, 9-6 SW), which has dropped three straight games for the first time this season, closes out the season with a three-game series at home against Adelphi University on Friday and Saturday. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 1:15 and a single game on Saturday. The Dolphins need a win in any of the three games to clinch a berth in the NE10 Championships.
