BASEBALL SWEEPS ADELPHI ON “SENIOR DAY”, 10-3, 6-5, TO CLINCH NE10 CHAMPIONSHIPS BERTH

Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore shortstop/pitcher Josiah Gray (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) had three hits in the first game and junior first baseman Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) had a walk-off sacrifice fly in the nightcap as the Le Moyne College baseball team swept a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Onondaga Baseball Complex. The Dolphins won the opener, 10-3, and rallied for a 6-5 win in 11 innings in the nightcap.

With the victory in the first game of the day, the Dolphins clinched the third seed in next week's Northeast-10 Conference Championships. Tuesday's first round opponent is still to be determined, but the game will be at one of the conference's two Connecticut-based institutions. New Haven will be the opponent if the Chargers drop one game on Sunday at American International or if Southern Connecticut State wins one game against Pace, while Southern Connecticut will be the opponent if the Owls drop both games on Sunday and New Haven wins both games.

Adelphi opened the scoring in the first game with one run on one hit in the fourth inning. Center fielder Jonathan Iadevaia walked and designated hitter Brett Malm was hit by a pitch to start the frame. After a groundout, left fielder Brandon Morse doubled to left center to drive in Iadevaia.

Le Moyne responded with a run on two hits and an Adelphi error in the bottom of the fourth. Redshirt senior right fielder Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant) led off with a single to the pitcher. After a pair of outs and a single through the right side by Cox, redshirt sophomore second baseman/shortstop Ben Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) reached on an error by the shortstop, which allowed Martin to score.

The Panthers regained the lead in the sixth with two runs. After a one-out single by right fielder Eric Hassell, Morse homered to left field for a 3-1 lead.

The Dolphins exploded for seven runs on six hits and one Adelphi error in the bottom of the sixth. Walsh and sophomore third baseman/catcher Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) started the frame with singles to right field. After sophomore designated hitter Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) reached on a fielder's choice as Walsh advanced to third on a throwing error by the pitcher, Walsh scored as senior catcher/third baseman Gabe Levanti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Northeastern) reached on a fielder's choice. Gray then tripled to left center to drive in Spinoso and Levanti. Following a pitching change, Martin singled down the left field line to plate Gray and then senior left fielder Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) walked. After Martin scored on a pair of wild pitches, junior center fielder Timothy Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) doubled down the left field line to knock in DiNorcia from third. Cox then singled and Walsh was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Corapi then scored the inning's final run on a groundout by Spinoso.

Le Moyne scored twice in the bottom of the eighth without getting a hit. Corapi, Walsh and Spinoso each walked around an out to load the bases. Corapi then raced home on a wild pitch, while Walsh scored on a sac fly by Place.

Junior Alex Kubera (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk/Niagara C.C.) earned his seventh win of the season after striking out four over six innings, while yielding three runs. Junior lefty Cody Barnes (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) picked up his second save of the season after tossing the final three innings, while striking out two. Martin joined Gray in posting three hits, while Cox and Spinoso each recorded two hits. David Butler took the loss out of the bullpen for the Panthers after giving up four runs (three earned) in just one-third of an inning.

In the nightcap, the Panthers scored three unearned runs in the first inning on three hits and one error. Third baseman/second baseman Steven Withers singled to right to start the game and then stole second. Center fielder Michael Cattani then reached second on a throwing error by the first baseman, which allowed Withers to score. After a pair of outs and a single to left by Morse, first baseman Thomas Colombo doubled to left center to knock in Cattani and Morse.

Adelphi added two runs in the second on three hits. Shortstop Michael Stack led off with a single up the middle and took second on a throwing error by the shortstop. Following a groundout, Stack scored on a wild pitch. Withers then singled to center, took second on a groundout, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single down the left field line by Malm.

Le Moyne broke through with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the third. Corapi and Cox started the frame with singled and Walsh drew a walk to load the bases. Spinoso then lifted a sac fly to right to plate Corapi. After a line out, Levanti singled up the middle to drive in Cox and Walsh.

The Dolphins tied the score at five in the bottom of the eighth. Following a leadoff single to center by Levanti and a pair of outs, DiNorcia blasted a home run to right field to tie the score.

After Adelphi left the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning, the Dolphins loaded the bases without any outs in the bottom of the 10th, but the Panthers turned a triple play (without the batter being retired) to get out of the jam.

The Panthers had runners on second and third with one out in the top of the 11th, but Gray struck the next two batters out to keep the game tied.

Le Moyne used a hit and an Adelphi error in the bottom of the 11th to win the game. DiNorcia led off with a laser through the right side and then took second on a sac bunt by Corapi. After DiNorcia advanced to third on a throwing error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt, he scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Cox.

Gray earned his first career victory on the mound after striking out four over two innings of work. Levanti joined Place as the second Dolphin this season to record five hits in a game, while DiNorcia finished the contest with three hits and Place added two. TJ Santiago, the wins leader in the conference with eight, suffered his third loss of the season after yielding one unearned run in one and two-thirds innings of relief.
