Syracuse, N.Y. – Kyle Stenberg and Michael O'Connell each recorded four points to lead fourth-ranked and third-seeded Merrimack College to a 10-5 win over the second-ranked and second seeded Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Championships at Ted Grant Field.
The Dolphins finish the season with a 14-3 record. The loss snaps Le Moyne's 20-game home win streak dating back to the 2015 Northeast-10 Conference Championship game. The defeat is also the first against the Warriors since the 2014 NE10 semifinals, snapping a run of seven straight victories in the series, including wins in the NCAA semifinals in 2015 and 2016.
Merrimack, which will face Adelphi in the NCAA semifinals next weekend, got on the scoreboard just 46 seconds into the game on Charlie Bertrand's 46th goal of the season. Stenberg put the Warriors up 2-0 with his 30th tally of the year with 12:39 remaining in the first quarter.
The Warriors extended their lead to 3-0 at the 11:52 mark of the second quarter as Bertrand scooped up a loose ball on the crease in an extra-man situation after a shot by Max Allen hit the post. O'Connell pushed the advantage to 4-0 by netting his 11th goal of the year from the left edge of the crease after taking a feed in an extra-man opportunity from Tim Towler.
Le Moyne finally broke through with 6:01 left in the first half as senior midfielder
Brian Rogers (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) registered his 17th goal of the year. Following a failed clear by the Warriors, junior attackman
Justin Kesselring (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) posted his team-best 40th goal of the season to get the Dolphins within 4-2. Rogers completed the scoring in the first with an unassisted marker with 35 seconds left.
The Dolphins completed their comeback 1:40 into the third quarter as sophomore midfielder
Dan Entenmann (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) tallied his 15th goal of the season from the right alley.
Merrimack answered with six straight goals to put the game away. After turnovers by each team, Stenberg scored from the crease in a man-up situation with 10:00 left in the third after picking up a loose ball off a save of a shot by Towler. Following a save by Edward Hellier, Towler gave the Warriors a 6-4 lead with 4:37 to go in the period after taking a pass in the left alley from O'Connell. Just 53 seconds later, Allen finished off a feed from Stenberg for a 7-4 advantage. After another save by Hellier, O'Connell recorded his second goal of the day with 41 seconds left after receiving a pass from Hunter Schmell.
Merrimack was successful on its fourth straight man-up opportunity 2:55 into the fourth quarter as O'Connell finished off a pass on the left crease from Bertrand for a 9-4 lead. Stenberg capped the six-goal outburst with 5:27 to play in the game for his 32nd goal of the season.

Junior goalkeeper
Jack Sweeney (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Onondaga C.C.) recorded seven saves over 57:33 between the pipes in the loss. Hellier finished the contest with 12 saves, including five in the fourth quarter, to earn his 13th win of the season. The Warriors recorded a 15-3 advantage in face-offs and 29-16 in ground balls, while the Dolphins committed just nine turnovers to Merrimack's 16.
