Syracuse, N.Y. – Freshmen
Sidney Hall (Adams Center, N.Y./South Jefferson) and
Nicole Delany (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) each scored three goals to lead the top-ranked and top-seeded Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team to an 11-4 win over 17th-ranked and fourth-seeded Stonehill College in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships semifinals on Saturday at Ted Grant Field.
The Dolphins improve to 18-0 on the season and advance to the Northeast-10 Conference Championship game for the sixth time in their seven years in the conference. The 18 wins tie the program's record for the most victories in a season, joining the 2011, 2015 and 2016 teams. The Dolphins will take on second-seeded and third-ranked Adelphi University on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Dolphins and Panthers are meeting for the conference title for the third straight year and for the sixth time in seven years. The Panthers have claimed four of the previous five meetings, with the Dolphins winning the middle matchup in 2013.
The Dolphins opened the scoring in the game just under three and one-half mintues into the contest. In transition, sophomore defender
Monica Sanna (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford) tallied her eighth goal of the year.
Stonehill countered with back-to-back goals for its only lead of the game. Kaitlin Healey evened the score at one apiece with 25:01 left in the half with her 22nd goal of the season. Shannon Booth put the Skyhawks in front with 23:26 to go with her 31st marker of the year.
Le Moyne responded with the final six goals of the half to take a 7-2 lead. Sophomore attacker
Maddie Knapp (Watertown, N.Y./South Jefferson) ignited the run with her 11th goal of the year at the 20:24 mark to tie the score. Following almost eight minutes of scoreless action, Hall converted a free-position shot for her 31st goal of the campaign. Delany followed with her 30th of the year with 11:31 left off a pass from Knapp. Delany scored again 2:44 later after collecting a pass from sophomore attacker
Bryanna Fazio (Watertown, N.Y./General Brown). Hall put the Dolphins up 6-2 with an unassisted tally with 6:32 remaining in the half. Senior midfielder
Vicki Graveline (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee), the Northeast-10 Conference Midfielder of the Year, completed the scoring in the half with 1:31 left by registering her 45th goal of the year on a free-position shot.
Le Moyne extended its lead to 8-2 with the first goal of the second half as Hall found the back of the net at the 22:37 mark after scooping up a loose ball outside the right side of the crease on a Stonehill turnover. The goal increased Hall's season point total to 48, which is the third-highest mark by a freshman in the program's history, trailing only Fazio's 82 from last year and Amanda Daniels' 50 in 2000.
After being held scoreless for 38:56, Stonehill registered its third goal of the game with 14:30 left to play. Off a pass from Brianna Doherty, Jennifer Wheaton tallied her 34th goal of the season.
The Dolphins scored the next two goals, in a span of 1:25, to regain control of the contest. Delany tallied a free-position goal in an extra-player situation with 11:15 left and Fazio followed with her 20th goal of season after taking a pass from redshirt junior midfielder
Nicole Easterly (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Onondaga C.C.).
Taylor Shannahan got the Skyhawks back within 10-4 with 6:59 left after taking a feed from Jenna Gilman, but senior midfielder
Molly McGuane (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) answered two minutes later with the game's final goal, her 19th of the season.
Freshman
Hannah George (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell), the Northeast-10 Goalkeeper of the Year, registered eight saves, including six in the second half, to earn her program record-tying 18th win of the season between the pipes. In addition to her three goals, Delany recorded four caused turnovers and picked up two ground balls. Bailey Grant recorded five saves, including three after halftime, in the loss for the Skyhawks.
