WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HOLDS OFF ASSUMPTION FOR 75-69 WIN

Worcester, Mass. – Sophomore guard McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) registered a double-double to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 75-69 victory over Assumption College on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference play at Laska Gymnasium.

Roberts' first double-double of the season consisted of 17 points, including 10 in the first half, and a season-high 10 assists, including six after halftime. Senior forward Nicole Riddick (Albany, N.Y./Colonie/UMass Lowell) tallied 14 of her 16 points in the second half, while grabbing a game-best six rebounds. Senior forward Courtney Webster (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) was the third Dolphin in double figures with 12 points, including six in each half.

Meghan Reen led all scorers in the contest with 21 points, 14 of which came in the second half, while grabbing four rebounds. Morgan O'Donnell scored 10 of her 15 points in the opening half, while pulling down five rebounds and posting three assists and two steals. Morgan O'Brien turned in 12 points in the setback.

The first quarter featured back-and-forth action as the teams traded four-point bursts. The Greyhounds posted a pair of five-point leads, but each time the Dolphins closed to within one. After Temi Falayi gave Assumption a 14-9 lead with 1:08 left, the Dolphins – Roberts specifically – closed the quarter with six of the last eight points to get within 16-15. Roberts drained a shot from three-point range and then followed an O'Donnell jumper with a conventional three-point play with 0.8 seconds left.

After Roberts made two free throws to start the scoring in the second quarter and give the Dolphins their first lead, the Greyhounds answered with an 8-2 run to take another five-point advantage. O'Donnell recorded a pair of conventional three-point plays and then Jordan Hawkins had a put-back lay-up.

The Dolphins responded with 10 of the next 13 points to take the lead back. Five different Dolphins converted a shot in the paint in the span.

Following a lay-up by Reen to knot the score with 1:55 left in the half, senior forward Corinne Poitevien (Bardonia, N.Y./Paramus Catholic (N.J.)) finished off a pass from Roberts to give the Dolphins a 31-29 lead at halftime.

Riddick made a pair of lay-ups to start the scoring in the third quarter before Reen answered with a three-pointer and a jumper.

The Dolphins then rattled off a 12-3 run between Assumption field goals to take their first double-digit lead of the game, 47-37, with 4:23 remaining in the quarter. Roberts tallied five of the 12 points, while four others combined for seven points.

The teams traded points over the final four minutes of the quarter as the Dolphins took a 56-46 lead into the final period.

After the Dolphins took a 60-48 lead on a Riddick lay-up with 8:41 to play, Assumption scored 10 straight points and 14 of the next 16 to even the score at 62 apiece with 3:12 to go. After Kiera O'Donnell and Reen each scored five points and Morgan O'Donnell scored two, O'Brien sank two foul shots to tie the score.

Out of a timeout, Poitevien registered a three-point play to give the Dolphins the lead back. After O'Brien countered with a lay-up, the Dolphins scored 10 of the next 12 points to take a 75-66 lead with just 25 seconds left. Senior forward Joanna Dobrovosky (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) and Riddick each scored four points in the span, while Poitevien had the other two.

Le Moyne (13-7, 9-5 NE10), which went 6-2 against Northeast Division foes for the second time in four seasons, returns home to face Adelphi University on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 as part of the NCAA Division II Showcase.
