Ellie Leszyk (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) made a tie-breaking free throw with 3.2 seconds remaining as the Le Moyne College women's basketball team registered a 62-59 win over Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference play on Tuesday evening at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
Sophomore guard
McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) led the Dolphins offensively with 19 points, 11 of which came in the opening quarter, while adding four assists. Senior forward
Nicole Riddick (Albany, N.Y./Colonie/UMass Lowell) recorded 11 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Kylie Lorenzen led the Penmen in the loss with 19 points, 13 of which came after halftime, while adding four rebounds, four steals and three assists. Catherine Stinson turned in 13 points as the game's only other double-digit scorer.
After the teams went back and forth over the first seven and one-half minutes of the game, which resulted in a 15-14 Le Moyne lead, the Dolphins scored seven of the last nine points of the opening quarter. Roberts nailed three three-pointers in the quarter and totaled 11 of Le Moyne's 22 points.
Lorenzen started the scoring in the second quarter with a lay-up, but the Dolphins followed with nine straight points to take their largest lead of the game, 31-18, with 57 seconds left. Riddick scored four of the points in the streak, while three other Dolphins combined for five points.
Victoria Dean got the Penmen within 31-21 at halftime with a three-pointer.
The Penmen scored the first seven points of the third quarter to extend their run to 10 points and get within three with 7:33 left. Lorenzen made a jumper and then Stinson buried a three-pointer and made a lay-up.
Le Moyne answered with seven straight points and nine of the next 10 to push its lead back to 11 with 2:50 remaining in the quarter. Four Dolphins scored in the span, led by three points from Roberts.
Southern New Hampshire got back within five, 42-37, with 1:18 left, but Roberts and Riddick countered with jumpers to give the Dolphins a 46-37 lead after three quarters.
After Le Moyne's lead bounced between seven and 12 points over the first five minutes of the fourth quarter and settled at 10 (59-49) on a lay-up by senior forward
Joanna Dobrovosky (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) with 5:02 left, the Penmen scored 10 straight points to even the score at 59 apiece. Gyanna Russell knocked down a three-pointer and made two free throws around two foul shots by Brianna Camara to get the Penmen within 59-56. Lorenzen then went 3-for-4 from the foul line over two possessions to tie the score with 43 seconds left.
Following a turnover by the Dolphins with 32 seconds left, Russell got off a lay-up with six seconds left, but was off the mark and Leszyk grabbed the rebound and was fouled. She missed the first free throw with 3.2 seconds left, but made the second to put the Dolphins back in front. Riddick then stole the ensuing in-bounds pass and drew a foul. She made both free throws with less than one second left to deliver the game's final score. Southern New Hampshire was unable to get off a potential game-tying shot.
Le Moyne (9-6, 5-4 NE10), which has won five of its last six games, hosts Merrimack College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
