Garden City, N.Y. – Junior forward
Salar Faryar (Frankfurt, Germany/Max-Eyth Schule) and sophomore midfielder
Robert Rohrhirsch (Garching bei München, Germany/Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium Garching/Munich University of Applied Sciences) each scored two goals to lead the Le Moyne College men's soccer team to a 4-3 upset victory over ninth-ranked Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday evening at Motamed Field.
After the Dolphins had three shots saved in the opening 16 minutes, Adelphi scored the game's first goal in the 24th minute on its first shot on goal. Off a cross by Paolo Marciano from the left side, Taylor Kaczynski slid a shot inside the far right post at the 23:01 mark for his sixth goal of the season.
Le Moyne, which snapped a four-game losing streak to the Panthers and won in Garden City for the first time in five games, answered back just under three and one-half minutes later. Off a short pass from the top of the box by second-year graduate student forward
Marek Weber (Fulda, Germany/Sportgymnasium Jena/Goethe-University Frankfurt), Faryar sent a 20-yard shot inside the right post at the 26:27 mark for his 12th tally of the year.
Each team put two shots on goal in the final 16 minutes of the half, but neither team was able to score.
The Dolphins took advantage of an Adelphi miscue to take the lead. Off a clearing attempt by the Panthers, the ball hit the back of an Adelphi defender and went to Faryar, who had an empty net to place his 13th goal of the season into at the 46:32 mark.
Le Moyne doubled its lead in the 66th minute. Off a feed from Weber, Rohrhirsch ripped a shot from the top of the penalty box into the top left corner of the net at the 65:33 mark for his third tally in two games.
Adelphi answered back 1:53 later as Marciano drilled a free kick from just outside the top of the penalty box into the top right corner at the 67:26 mark for his eighth goal of the year.
The Dolphins netted the eventual game-winning goal in the 73rd minute. After collecting another pass from Weber, Rohrhirsch carried the ball from the right side and chipped it over the charging goalkeeper at the 72:24 mark for his fourth marker of the season. Weber, who was named the NE10 Player of the Week on Monday, joins Cal Filtch (three times in 2015) as the only Dolphins over the last 16 seasons to record three assists in a game.
After having two shots saved over the next two minutes, the Panthers cut their deficit back to one in the 86th minute. James Thristino sent a cross from the top of the box to Kaczynski, who scored into the lower right corner at the 85:01 mark for his seventh goal of the campaign.
The Panthers were unable to get off a potential tying shot in the final minutes.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) registered a career-high seven saves, including four in the second half, to earn his 10th win of the season between the pipes. Matt Apicella posted nine saves, including five in the first half, in the loss for the Panthers. Each team recorded 18 shots, while Adelphi had a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
Le Moyne (12-2-1, 9-2-1 NE10), which clinched at least the second seed in next week's NE10 Championship, closes out the regular season on Friday against Bentley University at 3:00 p.m. The Dolphins can claim the top seed in the NE10 Championship with a win over the Falcons and an Adelphi tie or loss at American International.
