DeWitt, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College women's tennis team registered a 4-1 win over the University of New Haven in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships on Wednesday afternoon at Elevate Fitness.
With the victory, the Dolphins (12-4) advance to the NE10 semifinals for the second consecutive year (and second time in the program's history) and will face top-seeded Stonehill College on Friday at 1:00 p.m. The Skyhawks defeated the Dolphins, 6-1, in the regular-season matchup on September 23.
The Dolphins won the point in the doubles competition with victories at the second and third positions. The first win of the day came at the third spot as sophomore
Camila Humala (Lima, Peru/Antonio Raimondi) and freshman
Brooke Fernandez (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) recorded a 6-3 win over Shelby Clyne and Angela Mercurio. Sophomores
Marta Nunez (Rye, N.Y./Antonio Lopez (Spain)) and
Caroline St. Antoine (Longueuil, Québec/Cégep Édouard-Montpetit) clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the second position over Lilia Rodriguez and Nicole Mika. Senior
Tiffany Hamdan (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City/Roberts Wesleyan) and freshman
Birdem Oz (Istanbul, Turkey/TED Ankara College Foundation HS) were leading Laura Fermosel and Stephanie Gonzalez, 5-4, at the first spot when play was stopped.
In the singles competition, Nunez gave the Dolphins a 2-0 lead in the match by defeating Rodriguez at the third spot, 6-0, 6-1. Fermosel got the Chargers within 2-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Hamdan at the top position. Oz pushed Le Moyne's lead back to two with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Gonzalez at the second spot. After dropping the first set at the fourth spot, 1-6, St. Antoine rallied to defeat Mika with scores of 6-3 and 6-2 to clinch the match for the Dolphins. Freshman
Belen Wibmer (Maldonado, Uruguay/St. Joseph Mary College) and Humala were leading their matches at the fifth and sixth spots when the match was decided.
