MEN’S BASKETBALL DOWNS ADELPHI IN HOME OPENER, 83-74

Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior forward Kobi Nwandu (York, Pa./Northeastern York/East Stroudsburg) scored 17 points in the second half to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to an 83-74 victory over Adelphi University on Tuesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.

Nwandu finished the contest with a game-high 21 points, while adding seven rebounds and five steals. Sophomore guard Tim Leavell (Marion, Ind./Marion/State Fair C.C.) drilled four three-pointers and registered 17 of Le Moyne's 35 points in the first half. Senior guard C.J. Asuncion-Byrd (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich/St. Thomas More/Gannon) posted nine of his 14 points in the second half, while finishing the game with six rebounds. Redshirt junior guard Malik Garner (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow/Sunrise Christian Academy/Saginaw Valley State) recorded all 11 of his points after halftime.

Ronnie Silva led four Panthers in double figures with 15 points, including 13 in the second half. Dwaine Williams and Dejavaughn Utley each recorded 13 points and two assists off the bench, while Utley grabbed six rebounds. Nick Cambio posted 10 points and six rebounds.

Adelphi scored the first seven points of the game as the Dolphins were scoreless over the opening 5:43. Cambio (2), Williams (2) and Austin Beech (3) accounted for the seven points.

The Dolphins used a pair of 6-0 runs to take a 14-12 lead with 10:32 remaining in the half. Five Dolphins scored in the span, including five points from junior guard Ryan Roland (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Mercyhurst) and a go-ahead three-pointer by Leavell.

Following another three-pointer by Leavell, the Panthers rattled off nine of the next 11 points for a 23-19 advantage with 6:50 left. Conor McGuinness started the streak with a three-pointer and Utley capped it with a pair of baskets in the paint.

Le Moyne used a 13-4 run over 2:07 to take a 35-29 lead with 2:32 left in the half. Leavell had his last six points of the half in the run, while Nwandu scored his four points of the game and Asuncion-Byrd drilled a three-pointer.

Adelphi answered with the final nine points of the half to take a 38-35 lead into halftime. Utley bookended the run with baskets in the paint, while McGuinness made two free throws and Jack Laffey knocked down a three-pointer.

After Garner and Cambio traded baskets to start the scoring in the second half, the Dolphins ran off a 14-2 jaunt to take the lead. Garner, Nwandu and Asuncion-Byrd each drilled three-pointers in the streak.

The Panthers responded with a 13-3 run to take the lead back. Williams scored six of the points, while Silva hit a three-pointer and Beech and Laffey each had two points.

Le Moyne took control of the game with a 12-0 run over 3:32. Junior forward Tom Brown (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) started the run with a lay-up, Garner made a jumper, Nwandu scored five straight points and junior guard Zay Jennings (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic/Caldwell) capped the stretch with a three-pointer.

Adelphi's last charge was a 10-3 run to get within 71-67 with 4:02 to play. Four Panthers scored in the span, which was led by five points from Silva.

After the teams traded points over the next two and one-half minutes, the Dolphins scored six straight points from the foul line to put the game away. Nwandu, Asuncion-Byrd and Jennings each went 2-for-2 from the line in the span.
 
Le Moyne (3-1, 2-1 NE10), which has won six straight home openers, is back in action on Friday at the IUP Thanksgiving Invitational against the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown at 5:30 p.m. in Indiana, Pennsylvania.
