Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior guard
McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) scored 17 first-half points to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 72-60 victory over Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday evening at Ted Grant Court.
Roberts drained 6-of-7 three-point attempts en route to finishing the game with a season-high 20 points, while adding six assists. With her six three-pointers, Roberts is the first Dolphin in the program's history to have multiple career games with at least six three-pointers after she buried seven on February 25, 2018. Corinne Poitevien (Bardonia, N.Y./Paramus Catholic (N.J.)) registered her first career double-double with 15 points, including nine in the second half, and 10 rebounds. Freshman forward
Jenna Zimmerman (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) scored 12 points in her home debut, while adding five assists.
Niajah Morgan led the Panthers in the loss with 20 points, 18 of which came in the third quarter. Julia Strachan recorded 14 points in 33 minutes off the bench.
After the teams split the first two baskets of the game, the Dolphins rattled off 15 straight points for a 17-2 lead with 5:47 left in the opening quarter. Roberts buried a pair of three-pointers in the stretch, while freshman guard
Cameron Tooley (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) added five points.
Following 5-0 spurts by each team, Morgan made a lay-up with 1:45 left in the period to get the Panthers within 22-9 at the end of the first quarter.
Adelphi scored 10 of the first 17 points in the second quarter to trim its deficit to 10, 29-19, with 6:38 to go. Strachan and Katie Murphy each scored five points in the span for the Panthers.
Le Moyne answered with an 11-2 run to take its largest lead of the game, 40-21, with 14 seconds left in the half. Zimmerman drained a three-pointer to start the jaunt, while Roberts followed with back-to-back three-pointers off passes from Tooley and then converted a jumper.
Jess Camarda got the Panthers within 40-23 at halftime with a jumper in the paint as time expired.
The Panthers opened the third quarter with the first four points and 15 of the first 18 to close within five with 4:45 left. Morgan started the run with a basket in the paint and capped it with the final nine points to get Adelphi within 43-38.
After Zimmerman made a lay-up to snap an 11-0 run by the Panthers, Morgan scored four more points to cut Le Moyne's lead to just three, 45-42 with 3:54 left in the third.
Following three-pointers by redshirt sophomore
Liz Millea (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) and Morgan, the Dolphins closed out the quarter with eight of the last 12 points for a 56-49 lead after 30 minutes of play. Millea made another three-pointer, Roberts followed with her sixth of the game and then Poitevien ended the quarter's scoring with a lay-up off a feed from Roberts.
The Dolphins extended their lead to 12 with the first five points of the fourth quarter on another three-pointer by Millea and a lay-up by Poitevien off a high-low pass from Zimmerman.
Adelphi made one last push with seven of the next nine points to get within 63-56 with 4:47, but could not get any closer. Strachan scored six of the seven points on a pair of three-pointers.
Out of the game's final media timeout with 4:15 to go, the Dolphins scored seven straight points to put the game away. Poitevien registered a conventional three-point play and followed with a lay-up and then Zimmerman finished off a feed from Roberts.
Adelphi delivered the final margin with four of the last six points of the game.
Le Moyne (2-1, 2-1 NE10) plays its first non-conference game of the season on Friday against Florida Southern College at 1:00 p.m. at the Eckerd College Thanksgiving Classic in St. Petersburg, Florida.
