Albany, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College men's basketball team got at least 15 points from three players en route to a 77-60 victory over The College of Saint Rose on Wednesday evening in Northeast-10 Conference action at Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
Junior forward
Kobi Nwandu (York, Pa./Northeastern York/East Stroudsburg) led the Dolphins offensively with a game-high 21 points, including 13 in the second half, while dishing out four assists. Senior guard
C.J. Asuncion-Byrd (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich/St. Thomas More/Gannon) tallied 17 points, including 12 in the first half, in 15 minutes off the bench. Junior forward
Tom Brown (Ellicott City, N.Y./Centennial) recorded his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Sekou Sylla led the Golden Knights in the loss with a double-double of 16 points, including 12 in the first half, and 10 rebounds, six of which came in the first half. Matt Cerutti tallied 15 points, including eight in the first half.
After the teams split the first 12 points of the game, the Dolphins scored the next five points and 15 of the next 19 to take control of the game. Nwandu scored eight straight points in the span, while three others combined for seven points.
Following 5:44 of back and forth action in which Le Moyne's lead bounced between nine and 14 points and settled at 35-24 with 3:31 to go in the half, the Dolphins scored the last eight points of the half to take a 43-24 lead into halftime. In the stretch in which each team scored 14 points, Asuncion-Byrd recorded nine points, while Cerutti and Sylla each scored four points for the Golden Knights. Malik Garner (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow/Sunrise Christian Academy/Saginaw Valley State) capped the half's scoring with two free throws with 1.5 seconds remaining.
The Dolphins used an 8-0 run to kickstart a 23-9 run over 8:08 en route to taking their largest lead of the game, 68-35, with 9:51 to play. Nwandu registered 11 of the 23 points, while Brown scored five of the points.
Saint Rose scored seven straight points in 1:11 to trim its deficit to 26. Cerutti made a pair of shorts in the paint around a three-pointer by Adam Anderson.
Le Moyne pushed its lead back to 32, 77-45, with nine of the next 12 points. Asuncion-Byrd led the push with the first five points.
The Golden Knights closed out the game with the last 15 points over the final 4:18. Tyler Washington had five points in the span, while Sylla made a pair of shots in the paint and three other players posted two points each.
Le Moyne (5-2, 3-1 NE10), which has won five straight games over the Golden Knights, returns home to host Pace University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
