Buffalo, N.Y. – C.J. Massinburg registered a triple-double to lead 17th-ranked University at Buffalo to an 89-55 win over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Wednesday night at Alumni Arena. The contest was an exhibition game for the Dolphins, while counting for the Bulls.
Junior guard
Zay Jennings (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic/Caldwell) led the Dolphins offensively with 16 points, including 11 in the first half.
Massinburg's triple-double, the second in UB's history, consisted of 13 points, 13 rebounds (nine in the first half) and 10 assists (nine in the second half), while adding four steals. Dontay Caruthers came off the bench to score a game-best 20 points, including 14 in the second half, while dishing out five assists. Nick Perkins turned in 18 points off the bench, including 10 in the first half. Jeremy Harris recorded 16 points and seven rebounds.
Buffalo opened the game with the first five points and nine of the first 11 over the initial 4:35. Four different Bulls scored in the span, including a three-pointer from Massinburg.
The Dolphins countered with 13 of the next 16 points to take their first lead of the contest. Junior guard
Ryan Roland (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Mercyhurst) started the run with a three-pointer and senior guard
C.J. Asuncion-Byrd (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich/St. Thomas More/Gannon) followed with a put-back lay-up. After a lay-up by Perkins, Jennings buried a three-pointer and a pull-up jumper just inside the three-point line around a Perkins free throw to tie the score at 12. Graduate student guard
Tyree Chambers (Bayreuth, Germany/Graf-Münster Gymnasium/Providence) then drained a three-pointer from the left corner off a transition pass by Chambers for a 15-12 lead with 11:36 left.
The Bulls scored five straight points to take the lead back and followed with a 4-0 spurt after the teams exchanged the lead. In the 5-0 run, Perkins had a conventional three-point play and Caruthers made two foul shots. Later, Caruthers and Massinburg made lay-ups for a 23-20 lead with 8:09 to go.
Le Moyne answered with five straight points and eight of the next 10 for another three-point lead. Asuncion-Byrd scored the first five points with a three-pointer and a lay-up for a 25-23 lead, while Roland hit a jumper and junior forward
Kobi Nwandu (York, Pa./Northeastern York/East Stroudsburg) made a foul shot for a 28-25 advantage.
After the teams exchanged the lead four times over the ensuing four minutes, Jennings gave the Dolphins their final lead of the game with a three-pointer with 39 seconds left in the half. Harris ended the scoring in the half with a three-pointer from the right corner just before the time expired to send the teams into the intermission knotted at 37.
Buffalo scored the first seven points of the second half to take the lead for good. Davonta Jordan had a pair of baskets around a free throw by Caruthers for a 42-37 lead. Perkins then made a lay-up.
The Dolphins countered with a put-back lay-up by junior forward
Tom Brown (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and a three-pointer by Jennings to get with two for the final time with 16:23 left.
The Bulls countered with nine of the next 10 points to take their first double-digit lead. Perkins scored four points around five points by Caruthers.
After Nwandu drilled a three-pointer with 12:23 left to get the Dolphins within 55-48, the Bulls rattled off a 28-1 run, including 23 straight points on the back end of the streak, to take their largest lead of the game with 2:53 to play. Caruthers and Harris each scored eight points in the span, while five others accounted for the other 12 points.
The teams traded 6-0 runs in the final 2:34 to close out the game's scoring
Le Moyne (5-3) returns to Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday, hosting the University of New Haven at 3:00 p.m.
