BASEBALL OPENS SEASON WITH 11-6 WIN OVER EAST STROUDSBURG

Holly Springs, N.C. – Junior catcher Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) drove in three runs to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to an 11-6 season-opening win over East Stroudsburg University on Friday afternoon.

Following four scoreless innings to start the game, the Warriors struck first in the bottom of the fifth. First baseman Tom Nuneviller drew a walk to start the frame and then stole second. After taking third on a groundout, he scored on a double to right by third baseman Brock Kauffman.

The Dolphins took the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. With one out, redshirt freshman second baseman Brian O'Mara (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) drilled a home run to right field to tie the score. Following an out, senior center fielder Timothy Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) walked, stole second and then scored on a single to center by senior right fielder Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown).

Le Moyne tacked on three runs in the seventh inning. Spinoso led off with a single to left field and stole second base. After a fly out and back-to-back walks to load the bases, O'Mara drew a walk to force in Spinoso. Sophomore third baseman Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) followed with another walk to force in senior left fielder JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy). Redshirt junior shortstop Ben Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) then raced home as the catcher threw the ball over the pitcher's head.

The Dolphins scored six times in the ninth on five hits. Pittman led off with a double and then Walsh was hit by a pitch. After a sacrifice bunt, Jacques lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score Pittman. After Corapi was hit by a pitch, Cox singled up the middle to knock in Walsh and force a pitching change. Redshirt junior designated hitter Andrew Taft (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton/UBuffalo) then singled to right to plate Corapi. Spinoso completed Le Moyne's scoring with a three-run homer to left field.

East Stroudsburg pushed across five runs in the bottom of the ninth to deliver the final score. First baseman Laine Renaud led off with a double to left field, moved to third on a single up the middle and scored on a double to center by Kauffman. After an out, shortstop Joey Paolini launched a three-run homer to left center. Following an out, left fielder Zarley Cina homered to left to make the score 11-6.

Freshman lefty Joe Vail (Cromwell, Conn./Xavier) earned the victory out of the bullpen after striking out five over three and two-thirds scoreless innings, while giving up two hits. In front of a throng of professional scouts, junior righty Josiah Gray (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle), the top-ranked MLB Draft prospect in Division II, struck out four over a career-high four and one-third innings in his first career start, while yielding just one run on three hits. Cox led four Dolphins with multiple hits with three, while Spinoso, O'Mara and junior first baseman Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) each had two. Matt Durkin took the loss for the Warriors after giving up two runs over one inning.

Le Moyne (1-0) is back in action on Saturday with a doubleheader against the University of the Sciences at 2:30 p.m.
