BASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH UNIVERSITY OF THE SCIENCES, 4-2, 9-10

Holly Springs, N.C. – Redshirt junior first baseman Andrew Taft (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton/UBuffalo) doubled to drive in the go-ahead run to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 4-2 win over the University of the Sciences in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the North Main Athletic Complex. The Devils won the nightcap, 10-9.

The Dolphins started the scoring in the opener with a run on one hit in the first inning. Junior catcher/third baseman Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) walked with two outs, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a double to right by senior left fielder/center fielder JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy).

USciences evened the score in the bottom of the inning on one hit and a Le Moyne error. Center fielder T.J. Dezzi singled with one out and moved to second on a two-out walk by catcher/designated hitter Ryan Scholey. Pitcher/designated hitter Kris Morgenweck then reached on an error by the second baseman, which allowed Dezzi to score.

Le Moyne regained the lead in the top of the fourth on three hits and a USciences error. Pittman and redshirt junior shortstop Ben Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) opened the frame with singles. Following a sacrifice bunt and a pop out, senior center fielder Timothy Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) reached on an error by the third baseman, which allowed Pittman to score.

The Devils tied the score again in the bottom of the sixth on one hit. Shortstop Nick Amicon walked to start the inning and advanced to second on a sac bunt. After a single by second baseman Adam Reed, Amicon scored as left fielder Christian DeLuca reached on a fielder's choice.

The Dolphins plated two runs in the top of the seventh and final inning. After senior right fielder Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) walked with one out, Taft doubled to center to knock in Cox. Spinoso followed with an infield single and then Pittman walked to load the bases. After an out, Walsh singled to the right side of the infield to drive in Taft.

Freshman righty Sam Byrns (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane) earned his first career victory after tossing one inning in relief of junior starter Sam Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill), who struck out five over five innings, while allowing just an unearned run. Senior southpaw Cody Barnes (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) closed out the game for his first save of the season. Ryan Johnson took the loss after giving up two runs in two innings out of the bullpen.

The Devils struck first in the nightcap with a run on one hit in the top of the first inning. DeLuca walked to start the game and Dezzi followed with a single to right field. After an out, Scholey lifted a sacrifice fly to center to drive in DeLuca.

Le Moyne pushed across two runs in the bottom of the first on a pair of hits and an error by the Devils. After Taft and Spinoso walked with one out, junior first baseman Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) singled to left to drive in Taft. Two batters later, Ben Walsh reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, which allowed Spinoso to score.

USciences tied the score in the top of the second. Amicon led off with a double to left and came around to score on a double to center by right fielder Jordan Stennett.

The Dolphins took the lead back in the third inning. Ben Walsh led off with a double to right center, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.

The Devils answered back with a run in the fourth to knot the score again. Scholey, third baseman Tom Aaron and Amicon each singled to load the bases with zero outs. Scholey then scored on a sac fly by catcher Nate Steele.

Le Moyne scored twice in the bottom of the inning for its final lead of the game. Taft singled to center to start the frame, moved to second on a sac bunt and then scored on a single to center by Place. After a pitching change and an out, Ben Walsh walked and redshirt freshman second baseman Brian O'Mara (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) singled to the right side to load the bases. Freshman left fielder Nick Spinella (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) then drew a walk to force in Place.

USciences took the lead in the top of the fifth with five runs on four hits and one Le Moyne error. After DeLuca and Dezzi walked to start the inning and moved up a base on a wild pitch, Fabio doubled to left center to drive in both runners and tie the score. Following an out, Aaron tripled to right center to knock in Fabio with the go-ahead run. Amicon then singled to left to plate Aaron and force a pitching change. After a double to left center by Steele, Stennett drove in Amicon with a ground ball to the shortstop.

The Devils extended their lead to five with two runs in the sixth on just one hit. Fabio and Scholey walked to start the inning, moved up on a sac bunt and then scored on a single up the middle by Amicon.

The Dolphins scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to get within one, but left the bases loaded. Place walked, Pittman reached on an error and Ben Walsh walked to load the bases with no outs. O'Mara then singled to right field to drive in Place and Pittman. After a pitching change, a walk by Spinella to load the bases and an out, Cox drew a walk to force in Ben Walsh. Two batters later, Spinoso walked to force in O'Mara. The next batter popped out to the shortstop to end the frame.
