Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Le Moyne College softball team split a doubleheader on its second day at the Snowbird Freeze Out Tournament. The Dolphins started the day by defeating Lock Haven University, 7-1, but lost the second game to East Stroudsburg University, 2-1.
The Phins were led by sophomore second baseman
Jillian McManus (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), who tallied four RBI, junior right fielder
Lauren Zazzaro (Southington, Conn./Southington), who had three hits on the day and senior pitcher
Alexis Eastman (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott), who struck out ten Lock Haven hitters in a complete-game performance and three East Stroudsburg batters in relief.
Â
The Dolphins started the scoring against Lock Haven in the top of the first inning. After a single and a double, senior designated player
Tess Andrews (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) smacked a 2-out, two-RBI single to right field. The Dolphins would hold the lead through the remainder of the contest.
After four innings of no-hit ball from Eastman, the Dolphins added to their lead. McManus led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by graduate student center fielder
Kelsey Johnson (Greece, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy/UBuffalo/Syracuse). Sophomore third baseman
Peyton Bellrose (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) drove in McManus with a single to center field to increase the lead to three.
Â
The score was broken open by the Dolphins in the top of the sixth inning and it started with a lead-off double by junior left fielder
Madison DeRita (Higganum, Conn./Mercy). Following a bunt single and an infield single, McManus pushed the lead to seven with a grand slam to center field. That would do it offensively for the Dolphins as Eastman would shut down Lock Haven for the remainder of the game.
Â
Lock Haven tallied a run in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out triple to center field by senior center fielder Moriah Lindsey. Following the triple, Eastman would go on to retire four out of the remaining five batters that she faced to complete her stellar pitching performance.
Â
Kayla Gee took the loss for Lock Haven while giving up twelve hits and seven runs over seven innings of work.
Â
The Dolphins dropped their second contest of the day to East Stroudsburg, 2-1. The Dolphins faced a tough East Stroudsburg pitching staff and defense. Zazzaro tallied two hits for the Dolphins and freshman pitcher
Lauren Nichols (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) tallied five strikeouts. Nichols made her first career start for the Dolphins and struck out four of her first six batters faced.
Â
Le Moyne began the scoring in the third inning on a single by Zazzaro. Following a single and a fielding miscue by the Warriors, Zazzaro ripped a single to left field to drive in the Dolphins' only run of the game.
Nichols would keep East Stroudsburg off the board until the bottom of the fifth inning. Senior third baseman Mary Wallick led off with a double and that would be it for Nichols. Eastman relieved Nichols and retired the next three batters, but not without surrendering a Warriors run on a sacrifice fly by junior designated player Mary Vicendese.
Â
The Dolphins would threaten with a runner on third base in the top of the seventh inning. After a single to lead off the inning, the Dolphins advanced the runner to third but could not push the run across the plate thanks to stellar Warriors defense.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, East Stroudsburg would finally get to the Dolphin pitching staff. A pair of singles started the inning for the Warriors, and a deep fly ball to right field by Wallick sealed the walk-off win.
Â
Angelica Dark nabbed the win for the Warriors after 4.2 innings of work in relief of starter Erica Molinaro, who went 2.1 innings.
The Dolphins (3-1) return to action in another doubleheader on Sunday against Clarion University at 10:00 a.m. and Molloy College at 12:00 p.m.
