SOFTBALL FINISHES OPENING WEEKEND 5-1 AFTER SWEEPING CLARION AND MOLLOY

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Freshman shortstop Alyssa Jauregui (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) recorded four hits to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a sweep of Clarion University and Molloy College on Sunday on its final day at the Snowbird Freeze Out Tournament. The Dolphins opened the day with an 8-2 win over Clarion and then finished off Molloy in the second game of the day by a score of 3-1.

Clarion got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a home run by Cassidy Runyan, which was followed up with a run scored off a throwing error by the pitcher.

The score would remain 2-0 Clarion until the top of the 4th inning, when the Dolphins would break the game open. The rally started with a deep home run by sophomore pitcher/third baseman Peyton Bellrose (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool), who smacked a 2-2 pitch over the right field fence to bring the game to 2-1. Following a line-out, Jauregui smoked a double to center field and scored on a single by junior left fielder Madison DeRita (Higganum, Conn./Mercy), who moved up a base on an error. The Dolphins would add another run off of yet another Clarion fielding miscue. With a runner on third, a walk and a single would force a Clarion pitching change. Following the swap, five of the next six Dolphin batters would reach base, tallying two runs on bases-loaded walks and a third when Jauregui was hit by a pitch.

The 7-2 lead would prove to be enough for the Dolphins as freshman pitcher Lauren Nichols (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) would relieve Bellrose to start the bottom of the fifth inning. In the top of the sixth inning, Nichols received another run to work with when Jauregui drove in Bellrose for her third hit of the game. Nichols would go on to strikeout six Clarion batters in her three innings of work, picking up her first career save.

Laura Sadowski took the loss for Clarion as she worked three and one-third innings and gave up seven hits while striking out one.

In the second game of the day, the Dolphins would rely on senior righty Alexis Eastman (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) to carry them through the game in a 3-1 victory over the Lions. Eastman delivered her second complete game of the weekend, while striking out five and allowing just three hits, to carry the Dolphins to the win.

It took until the sixth inning for the scoring to start, when junior right fielder Lauren Zazzaro (Southington, Conn./Southington) smacked a two-run home run over the center field fence to give the Dolphins a 2-0 lead. After two singles and a walk, sophomore second baseman Jillian McManus (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) would add to the Dolphin lead with a hard single to third base, scoring the third and final run for the Dolphins.

Eastman surrendered a homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning to Kaitlyn Snyder, who launched a 3-2 pitch over the left-center field fence, just out of the reach of DeRita. After giving up another single in the inning, Eastman would go on to finish out her performance without giving up another hit.

Courtney Greene took the loss for Molloy after five and two-thirds innings of work in which she gave up eight hits and struck out four Le Moyne batters on the day.

The Dolphins, who went 5-1 at the Snowbird Freeze Out Tournament for the third straight year, return to action when they travel to Clermont, Florida for "The Spring Games", where they will play 13 games over eight days beginning on March 4th.
