Lauren Zazzaro (Southington, Conn./Southington) scored in the bottom of the seventh to force extras and then hit a walk-off grand slam in the eighth as the Le Moyne College softball team opened its week at The Spring Games with an 11-7 win over the University of Mary on Sunday evening. The Dolphins then defeated Seton Hill University, 6-2.
Against UMary, the Dolphins started the scoring in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs. After freshman shortstop
Alyssa Jauregui (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Zazzaro walked, sophomore designated player/pitcher
Peyton Bellrose (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) doubled to right field with one out to plate Jauregui and Zazzaro.
The Marauders answered back in the second with two runs of their own. Catcher Colleen Crutchfield led off with a homer to right center. After left fielder Emma Noble reached second on a dropped fly ball by the left fielder, second baseman Kylie Alto doubled her home with a drive to left center.
Le Moyne regained the lead in the second inning with three runs on three hits. Freshman center fielder/left fielder
Kaily LaForce (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) and sophomore second baseman
Jillian McManus (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) recorded consecutive singles to start the inning. After an out, sophomore catcher
Ally Nicolosi (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) singled to drive in LaForce. Zazzaro followed with a sacrifice fly to right to knock in McManus. Nicolosi then scored on a passed ball.
UMary got one run back in the third on two hits. Center fielder Rebekkah Keller singled with one out and then stole second. After an out, shortstop Paige Matsuki singled to right to plate Keller.
The Marauders took the lead in the top of the fifth with three runs on three hits. First baseman/designated player Sarah Thompson walked, right fielder Kasidy Chileen doubled to right center and Keller walked to load the bases without any outs. Third baseman Madison McGonigal then drew a walk to force in Thompson. After an out, Crutchfield doubled to left center to knock in Chileen, while Keller was thrown out at home. Noble then singled to left to knock in McGonigal with the go-ahead run.
The Dolphins evened the score at six in the bottom of the sixth without getting a hit. Sophomore first baseman
Taylor Artley (York Haven, Pa./Red Land) and LaForce walked to open the frame. After a pitching change and a sacrifice bunt, Artley scored on a passed ball.
UMary regained the lead in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Matsuki struck out, but reached first on a wild pitch. Following a single by Crutchfield and a walk by Noble to load the bases, Alto singled to drive in Matsuki, but Crutchfield was thrown out at home to end the inning.
Zazzaro led off the seventh with a walk and moved around to third on a sac bunt and a groundout. She then scored the tying run on a passed ball. The Dolphins got the winning run to third base, but could not get her home.
Following a scoreless top of the eighth, the Dolphins walked off with the win in the bottom of the inning. After LaForce was placed on second to start the inning, McManus singled to the pitcher and took second base. Following a walk and an out at home, Zazzaro launched a grand slam to center to end the game.
Bellrose earned her third win of the season after striking out four over the final four innings, while yielding two runs. Zazzaro finished the game with a career-high five RBI. Brieann Backes took the loss for the Marauders after allowing four runs in one-third of an inning.
Against Seton Hill, the Griffins started the scoring with a run in the bottom of the third without getting a hit. Second baseman Brooke Bower reached on an error to start the inning, moved to second on a sac bunt and then scored as shortstop Christiana Skrabak reached on an error.
Le Moyne took the lead in the fifth with three runs on three hits and two errors. LaForce reached on an error by the third baseman and McManus followed by reaching on an error by the pitcher. Graduate student center fielder
Kelsey Johnson (Greece, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy/Buffalo/Syracuse) then singled to plate LaForce, while McManus scored on a single by Artley. Zazzaro followed with a double to drive in Johnson.
The Dolphins added three more runs on the sixth. Freshman catcher
Olivia Littman (Newfane, N.Y./Newfane) led off with a single, moved to second as McManus was hit by a pitch with one out and then scored on a single by Johnson. After Artley walked to load the bases, Zazzaro was hit by a pitch to force in McManus. Bellrose then lifted a sac fly to left to knock in Johnson.
The Griffins scored once in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to bring the tying run up to bat. Catcher Chelsean Rohan walked, moved to second on a groundout and then scored on a two-out double by Bower.
Senior righty
Alexis Eastman (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) struck out five, while yielding just five hits, to improve to 4-1 on the season. Devyn Terry took the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) over seven innings, while striking out six.
Le Moyne (7-1) returns to action on Monday with a doubleheader against LIU Post beginning at 2:00 p.m.
