Springfield, Mass. – Alyssa Guyon recorded 18 points to lead American International College to a 67-54 upset of the Le Moyne College women's basketball team in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Butova Gymnasium.
Freshman guard
Gabriella Badway (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) scored a career-high 12 points, all of which came on 5-of-5 shooting in the second half, in a career-best 21 minutes off the bench. Sophomore guard
McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) was the only other Dolphin to reach double figures, scoring 10 points, but did so without connecting on a three-pointer for the first time this season and for just the fifth time in her 50-game career.
Guyon tallied 11 of her game-high point total in the first half, while grabbing eight rebounds, including six in the first half. Dana Watts turned in a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, including 11 points and six rebounds in the second half. Rashana Siders also scored 15 points for the Yellow Jackets.
American International, which has won nine-straight games over the Dolphins at home, scored the first seven points of the game and pushed its lead to 16-7 at the end of the first quarter. Guyon scored all seven points in the initial spurt, while Watts finished the quarter with four points.
After the Dolphins scored four of the first six points of the second quarter, the Yellow Jackets scored six straight points and 13 of the last 15 points of the period to take a 32-13 lead into halftime. Siders scored six points in the quarter, while Guyon made two jump shots.
The Yellow Jackets scored the first seven points (from three players) of the third quarter to extend their lead to a game-high 26 points with 6:54 remaining.
Following 10 points from each team over the next 4:16, which resulted in a 49-23 AIC lead, the Dolphins tallied the last nine points of the quarter to get back within 17, 49-32. Badway had the first three points, while Roberts closed out the quarter by making two free throws.
The Dolphins continued their run with the first five points of the fourth quarter.
After the Yellow Jackets pushed their lead back to 16 with 6:32 left on a pair of free throws from Siders, Le Moyne scored 13 of the next 20 points to close within 10 (62-52) with 1:13 to play. Badway had four of the points, while senior guard
Ellie Leszyk (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads), who made her first start of the season, drained a three-pointer to cap the span.
AIC went 5-of-6 from the foul line in the final 63 seconds to hold off the Dolphins.
Le Moyne (14-8, 10-6 NE10), which had its season-high four-game win streak snapped, is back returns to action following a mid-week bye on Saturday at Southern Connecticut State University at 3:30 p.m.
