Uniondale, N.Y. – First baseman Angelo Navetta smacked a go-ahead single in the eighth inning to lead Molloy College to a 9-8 come-from-behind victory over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Mitchel Field.
The Dolphins opened the scoring in the first inning as redshirt junior first baseman
Andrew Taft (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton/Buffalo) blasted his NE10-leading eighth home run of the season to center field.
The Lions evened the score at one apiece in the bottom of the third. Third baseman Jake McCarthy was hit by the inning's first pitch, moved to second on a groundout, took third on a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by second baseman/third baseman Jack McCarty.
Le Moyne regained the lead with two runs without getting a hit in the top of the fourth. Redshirt junior shortstop
Ben Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) and junior catcher
Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) drew consecutive walks to start the frame. After an out, sophomore third baseman
Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) reached on a dropped fly ball by the center fielder, which allowed Walsh to score. Spinoso then scored on a sacrifice fly by redshirt freshman second baseman
Brian O'Mara (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill).
The Dolphins pushed their lead to 4-1 in the top of the seventh with a run on one hit and an error. O'Mara led off with a single to center, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored as Taft reached on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder.
Molloy cut its deficit to 4-3 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. After right fielder Elijah Leerdam doubled with one out, Navetta launched a home run to center.
Le Moyne extended its lead to four with three runs on three hits in the top of the eighth. Jacques singled to left with one out and moved to second on a walk by O'Mara. After senior right fielder
Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) singled to right to load the bases, Taft doubled to left center to clear the bases.
Molloy took the lead with six runs on six hits in the bottom of the eighth. After catcher Michael Wall singled and shortstop James Messina doubled to start the inning, McCarty doubled to left to knock in Wall and Messina and force a pitching change. Following a bunt single by left fielder Jake Saltzman to put runners at the corners, McCarty scored on a balk. After center fielder/pitcher Matt Overton walked, Leerdam evened the score at seven with a double to center to drive in Saltzman. Navetta then singled to center to drive in Overton and Leerdam.
The Dolphins scored a run in the top of the ninth, but were unable to get the tying run on base. Walsh led off with a double to center and moved to third on a passed ball. Spinoso then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Walsh.
Senior lefty
Cody Barnes (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) fell to 3-1 on the season after giving up three runs on three hits and a walk in one-third of an inning out of the bullpen. Taft finished the game with two hits and four RBI, while Cox had two hits. Lucas Burton earned the win out of the bullpen for the Lions, despite allowing three runs on three hits and one walk in one inning of work. Overton earned the win after retiring three of the four batters he faced.
