BASEBALL OPENS NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE PLAY WITH SWEEP OF SAINT MICHAEL’S, 5-0, 13-3

Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior righty Josiah Gray (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) tossed a three-hit shutout in the first game and six players each had two hits in the nightcap as the Le Moyne College baseball team swept Saint Michael's College in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Friday at the Onondaga Community College baseball complex. The Dolphins won the opener, 5-0, and took the nightcap, 13-3.

The Dolphins scored the only run they would need in the opener in the second inning. With two outs, junior catcher Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) walked, stole second and scored on a double to left field by sophomore third baseman Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa).

Le Moyne tacked on three runs on three hits in the sixth inning. Senior center fielder Timothy Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) led off with a walk, moved to second on a bunt single by senior right fielder/first baseman Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) and took third on a single to center by redshirt junior first baseman Andrew Taft (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton/Buffalo). Junior designated hitter Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) followed with a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Corapi. Following an out, redshirt junior shortstop Ben Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) tripled to center to knock in Cox and Taft.

The Dolphins finished off their scoring in the bottom of the eighth with a run on two hits. Taft led off with a double to the left field wall, took third on a line out to right and scored on a triple down the right field line by Walsh. Walsh is the first Dolphin to have two triples in one game since Derek Walsh '98 against Rider on April 26, 1998 and is just the third Dolphin to do it over the last 31 seasons.

Gray, who has tossed 16 straight scoreless innings, struck out nine batters in his first career shutout and first nine-inning complete game, while winning his fifth consecutive decision. In addition to his nine strikeouts, Gray retired nine Purple Knights via groundout and nine via fly outs in his 88-pitch performance. Nick Dorcean took the loss for the Purple Knights after yielding four runs on four hits over six innings, while striking out three.

In game two, the Purple Knights struck first with a pair of runs in the first inning on three hits. Third baseman Dante Moran singled to the hole on the left side with one out before right fielder/center fielder Joe Robertson doubled down the left field line. After a strikeout, left fielder/right fielder Cameron Kroeger singled up the middle to drive in Moran and Robertson.

Le Moyne took the lead in the bottom of the first with three runs on four hits. Cox singled to center and Taft singled to right to start the frame. Place then singled to right field, while Cox scored on an error by the right fielder. After a groundout and a walk by Walsh to load the bases, Spinoso singled to left to drive in Taft and Place.

The Dolphins scored three times in the second on three hits. Freshman left fielder Nick Spinella (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) reached second on an error by the third baseman to start the inning. After Cox singled to center, Taft lifted a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Spinella, while Cox took second on a throwing error by the right fielder. Place then doubled to center to plate Cox. Following an out, Walsh singled to center to knock in Place.

Le Moyne extended its lead to 11-2 with five runs in the fourth inning on three hits. Cox walked to start the frame, stole second, took third on a single by Taft and scored on a bases-loaded single to center by senior left fielder/center fielder JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy). Following a pitching change, Walsh walked to force in Taft. Place then scored on a groundout by Spinoso. Jacques then singled up the middle to drive in Pittman and Walsh.

Saint Michael's scored its third run of the game in the sixth inning. Designated hitter Trevor Allen led off with a walk, took second on a single by Kroeger and moved to third on a single by first baseman Joe Brady. After a pitching change and two strikeouts, second baseman Anthony Azpeitia walked to force in Allen.

The Dolphins got the run back in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman pinch-hitter Casey Kretsch (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) walked to start the inning, moved to second on a single by freshman second baseman Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern), took third on a groundout and scored as junior pinch-hitter David DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) reached on a fielder's choice.

Le Moyne finished off the game's scoring in the bottom of the seventh. Pittman led off with a single down the left field line and moved to third on a two-out double down the left field line by Kretsch. Smith then singled to left to drive in Pittman.

Junior righty Sam Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) earned his second win of the season after striking out 10 over five-plus innings, while yielding three runs on six hits.
Zach Rodgers suffered the loss after giving up 10 runs (seven earned) on nine hits over three-plus innings.

Le Moyne (16-6, 2-0 NE10), which improved to 5-0 all-time against the Purple Knights, returns to action on Friday at Adelphi University at 3:00 p.m.
