Garden City, N.Y. – Redshirt junior first baseman/designated hitter
Andrew Taft (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton/Buffalo) had four hits in the opener and redshirt junior shortstop
Ben Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) had two hits and scored two runs in the nightcap to lead the 22nd-ranked Le Moyne College baseball team to a sweep of Adelphi University in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at William Bonomo Field. The Dolphins won the first game, 11-6, and took game two, 7-2.
The Dolphins started the game's scoring in the opener with a run in the first inning on a solo home run to left center by Taft on an 0-1 pitch, just like he did in the series opener on Friday. The home run was Taft's NE10-leading 10th of the season, which makes him just the 19th player in the program's history to smack double-digit home runs and the first since Chris Edmondson '10 had 12 in 2010.
The Panthers tied the score in the bottom of the first on one hit. Second baseman Stephen Withers drew a walk to start the inning, stole second with one out and scored on a double to left center by third baseman Brett Malm.
Le Moyne took the lead for good with three runs on three hits and three Adelphi errors in the second inning. Redshirt freshman second baseman
Brian O'Mara (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) singled to the shortstop with one out and advanced to second on a throwing error by the shortstop. After senior center fielder
Timothy Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) reached on catcher's interference and senior right fielder
Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) singled through the left side to load the bases, Taft reached on a fielding error by the shortstop to drive in O'Mara. Junior designated hitter/first baseman
Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) followed with a single up the middle to plate Corapi and Cox.
Adelphi got one run back in the bottom of the second. Catcher Kevin Krippel led off with a double to right and advanced to third on a throwing error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt. Two batters later, right fielder Lucas Terwilliger lifted a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Krippel.
The Panthers added another run in the third as first baseman Thomas Colombo led off the inning with a home run to right field.
The Dolphins pushed their lead back to three with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Taft was hit by the third pitch of the frame and moved to second on the inning's second out. After a dropped foul ball by the catcher kept the inning alive for the Dolphins, junior catcher/third baseman
Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) tripled to center to drive in Taft. Sophomore left fielder
Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) then reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, which allowed Spinoso to score.
Le Moyne plated one run in the fifth on two hits. Corapi was hit by a pitch to start the inning and then took second on a passed ball. After Taft singled to the shortstop to put runners on the corners, Place singled to center to knock in Corapi.
Adelphi closed within 7-5 in the bottom of the fifth. Malm walked with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Colombo doubled to left and a strikeout, pinch-hitter Kory Cassara doubled to left center to drive in Malm and Colombo.
The Dolphins got one run back in the sixth. Tuey led off with a single to left, stole second, took third on a fly out and scored on a sac fly to center by O'Mara.
Le Moyne took a four-run lead again in the seventh with one run. Cox singled through the right side to start the frame and came around to score on a double to center by Taft.
Adelphi completed its scoring in the bottom of the seventh with a run. Malm was hit by a pitch to start the inning, took second on a single by Colombo and moved to third on a walk to load the bases. Malm then scored as center fielder Jonathan Iadevaia grounded out to the third baseman.
After not scoring in the eighth inning, just the second inning of the game not to score, the Dolphins scored twice in the final inning. Cox led off with a single through the right side, stole second, advanced to third on a single by Taft and scored on an error by the second baseman on the play. Place then doubled to right center, but Taft was thrown out at the plate. Following a walk by Walsh and a fly out, Place scored on a wild pitch.
Junior righty
Sam Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) improved to 3-0 on the season after striking out 10 over five innings for the second straight start, while yielding five runs (four earned). Senior righty
Alex Kubera (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk/Niagara C.C.) picked up his second save in as many days after tossing the final four innings, while striking out two and allowing just two hits and one run. In addition to Taft's four hits, Cox and Place had three each and
Ben Walsh had two. Michael Tarpey suffered the loss after giving up four runs (one earned) on five hits over two innings.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins struck first with a run on two hits in the second inning. O'Mara led off with a single to third base, advanced to third on a double down the left field line by redshirt junior catcher
Matt Buroni (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) and scored on a sac fly to right by junior left fielder
David DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day).
