West Haven, Conn. – Freshman righty
Ryan Murphy (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) tossed a seven-inning no-hitter in game two as the 17th-ranked Le Moyne College baseball team recorded a pair of shutout victories over seventh-ranked University of New Haven in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader on Sunday at Frank Vieira Field. The Dolphins won the opener, 7-0, in nine innings and recorded a 3-0 win in the nightcap.
Murphy's no-hitter is the eighth individual no-hitter in the program's history and the first since then-sophomore
Sam Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) accomplished the feat last March 19 at LIU Post. Of the eight no-hitters, Murphy's is the first recorded by a freshman.
In the opening game, the Dolphins scored three times on three hits in the bottom of the second inning. Redshirt freshman second baseman
Brian O'Mara (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) singled to left with one out, moved to second on a walk by junior left fielder
David DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) and came around to score on a single to left by senior center fielder
Timothy Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy). Senior right fielder
Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) followed with a double to right to plate DiNorcia. Corapi then scored on a groundout to third by redshirt junior first baseman
Andrew Taft (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton/Buffalo).
The Dolphins added a run on two hits and a New Haven error in the seventh. Taft singled to left with one out and junior designated hitter
Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) followed by drawing a walk. After a fly out, junior catcher
Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) reached on an error by the pitcher to load the bases. Sophomore third baseman
Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) then singled to center to drive in Taft.
Le Moyne used four hits and a New Haven error to score three runs in the eighth. Corapi singled to the third baseman to open the inning and took second on a throwing error by the third baseman. Cox followed with a single to left to knock in Corapi. After an out and a stolen base by Cox, he scored from second on a single to left by Place. Redshirt junior shortstop
Ben Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) then doubled to drive in Place with the final run of the game.
Sam Walsh improved to 4-0 on the season after striking out eight batters over seven innings, while allowing just two hits.
Ben Walsh and Corapi each recorded three hits, while Cox added two. Devon DiMascio suffered his first loss of the year after allowing three runs and five hits over two-plus innings.
Murphy got the only run support he would need in the first inning. Cox singled to right to open the frame, stole second and scored as Place reached on a fielding error by the first baseman. After
Ben Walsh singled to left, the pitcher tried to pick him off, but threw the ball away, which allowed Place to score.
The Dolphins finished off the day's scoring with a run in the bottom of the fourth on three hits. Jacques led off with a single to right center, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, took third on a single by DiNorcia and scored on a single to center by Cox.
Murphy struck out 10 batters in the contest and faced just two batters over the minimum as one was hit by a pitch in the third and right fielder Joe Caico, who entered the game with the highest average in the conference (.420), reached on an error in the fifth as he tried to break up the no-hitter with a bunt on the second pitch of the fifth. Of Le Moyne's last six no-hitters, Murphy's 10 strikeouts are the most.
Izaiya Mestre dropped to 5-1 on the season after allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits over six innings, while striking out four.
Le Moyne (24-8-1, 10-2-1 NE10, 6-1 SW), which took a three-game lead in the loss column over New Haven for first place in the division, is back on the diamond on Tuesday at The College of Saint Rose at 3:30 p.m.
