LIU POST DOWNS SOFTBALL, 3-1, IN FIRST ROUND OF NCAA EAST REGIONAL

Garden City, N.Y. – Katie Humhej allowed just three hits to lead fourth-seeded LIU Post to a 3-1 win over the fifth-seeded Le Moyne College softball team in the first round of the NCAA Championships East 1 Regional on Thursday afternoon at Adelphi University's Janet L. Ficke Field.

With the loss, the Dolphins fall into the loser's bracket and will take on Adelphi University in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. The winner of that contest will advance to another elimination contest scheduled for 4:00 p.m. against the loser of the 11:00 a.m. winner's bracket game between LIU Post and the Caldwell University, which advanced to the winner's bracket with a 13-6 win over Adelphi.

The Dolphins got on the scoreboard first with a run on two hits in the third inning. Freshman shortstop Kaily LaForce (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) led off with a single to right field and came around to score on a double to right field by sophomore first baseman Taylor Artley (York Haven, Pa./Red Land).

LIU Post took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with two runs on one hit and one Le Moyne error. After a walk by second baseman Leah Mele and a pop out to start the inning, left fielder Allie Laird reached on a bunt single to third base, while Mele and Laird both came around to score on a throwing error by the third baseman.

The Pioneers tacked on a run on three hits in the bottom of the fifth. Shortstop Patricia Dun singled to center with one out and moved to third on a two-out single to right by third baseman Breanna Klaiber, who took second on the throw to third. Mele then singled to second to plate Dun.

Senior righty Alexis Eastman (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) took the loss after yielding three runs (one earned) and nine hits over six innings, while striking out four. Humhej struck out three to collect her 18th win of the year.
