McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 43 seconds left as the Le Moyne College women's basketball team rallied for its 10th straight victory, 58-56, over Merrimack College on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Bert Hammel Court.
Roberts registered her third career double-double and her second of the season with game-highs of 23 points and a career-best 11 rebounds. With her seventh point of the game, she passed Jeanne Johnstone '84 for 15th on the program's all-time scoring list and finished the game with 998 points. Redshirt sophomore guard
Liz Millea (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) tallied 16 points, including seven in the fourth quarter. Graduate student forward
Corinne Poitevien (Bardonia, N.Y./Paramus Catholic (N.J.)) recorded eight of her 10 points in the first quarter, while grabbing eight rebounds.
Mayson Kimball led four Warriors in double figures with 13 points, while pulling down six rebounds. Denia Davis-Stewart posted a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. Karlee Alves and Alyssa Casey each scored 10 points, while Alves dished out eight assists.
After Alyssa Casey hit a three-pointer to give Merrimack a 5-2 lead, the Dolphins scored the next 11 points. Freshman forward
Jenna Zimmerman (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) made a jumper, Roberts scored five points and then Poitevien made a pair of lay-ups for a 13-5 lead with 4:03 left in the first quarter.
Merrimack scored three of the next five points, but Poitevien made a lay-up to finish off the quarter's scoring with the Dolphins in front 17-8.
Following a three-pointer by Kate Mager to start the scoring in the second quarter, the Dolphins scored 10 of the next 14 points to take their largest lead of the game, 27-15, with 5:13 to go in the first half. Freshman guard
Cameron Tooley (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and Millea bookended the span with three-pointers.
The Warriors responded with seven straight points and 14 of the next 16 to get within two points, 31-29, with 20 seconds left in the half. Five players scored in the stretch, led by five points from Casey.
Tooley hit a runner from the foul line at the buzzer to give the Dolphins a 33-29 lead at halftime.
After the Dolphins pushed their lead to seven on a three-pointer by Roberts and a fast-break lay-up by Zimmerman, the Warriors scored seven consecutive points and 13 of the next 15. Five players scored in the span, which was capped by four points from Davis-Stewart for a 44-40 lead with 58 seconds left.
Roberts made a three-pointer with 30 seconds left to get the Dolphins within 44-43 after three quarters of play.
Merrimack scored eight of the first 10 points in the fourth quarter to take its largest lead of the game, 52-45, with 6:28 to play. Kimball made a lay-up and then Alves made a three-pointer and recorded a conventional three-point play around a Millea jumper.
After Alves made a jumper to give the Warriors a 56-50 lead with 4:09 remaining in the game, the Dolphins scored the last eight points of the contest. Millea started the comeback by beating the shot clock with a three-pointer and drawing a foul on the shot. She made the free throw to get the Dolphins within two.
Following five missed shots by the Warriors, including three during a one-minute-and-20-second possession, Roberts buried a three-pointer from the top of the key with 43 seconds left to put the Dolphins in front.
The Warriors had two shots in the paint in the final 33 seconds, but were unable to convert either.
After Millea completed the game's scoring with a free throw with 1.1 seconds left, Merrimack threw the ball away and the Dolphins were able to run the clock out.
Le Moyne (14-2, 8-2 NE10), which has the second-longest win streak in the 39-team East Region, returns home to host Stonehill College on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
