Syracuse, N.Y. – Four Dolphins scored in double figures as the Le Moyne College women's basketball opened 2019 with a 78-57 victory over East Stroudsburg University on Wednesday evening in non-conference action at Ted Grant Court.
The Dolphins, who went unbeaten (6-0) in non-conference action for the first time since the 2000-01 season (4-0), were led offensively by junior guard
McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse), who had a game-high 18 points, including 11 in the first half, seven assists and five rebounds. Freshman forward
Jenna Zimmerman (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) recorded 10 of her 16 points in the first half, while pulling down eight rebounds. Graduate student forward
Corinne Poitevien (Bardonia, N.Y./Paramus Catholic (N.J.)) registered her fifth double-double in six home games with 15 points (13 in the second half) and a game-best 10 rebounds (eight in the second half), including six on the offensive end. Freshman guard
Cameron Tooley (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) posted 12 points, including 10 in the second half.
Noelle Powell led the Warriors in the setback with 16 points, 14 of which she scored in the first half. Tiffany Lapotsky was the only other Warrior in double digits with 13 points.
After Lapotsky drained a three-pointer to give the Warriors a 7-4 lead with 5:56 left in the first quarter, the Dolphins rattled off 10 straight points. Roberts made a three-pointer, Tooley converted a lay-up, Zimmerman recorded a conventional three-point play and then junior forward
Colleen Corcoran (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) had a put-back lay-up with 3:28 remaining.
East Stroudsburg countered with nine of the next 11 points to even the score at 16 in the final seconds of the quarter. Marlene Bassett tallied six of the points, while Powell nailed a three-pointer.
Roberts gave the Dolphins the lead for good by banking in a shot from just inside half court as time expired in the quarter.
Following a three-pointer by Powell and a jumper by Abby Schoffstall to get the Warriors within 22-21 with 6:22 left in the second quarter, the Dolphins scored eight straight points for a nine-point advantage. Roberts started the run with a three-pointer, sophomore forward
Madison Shetrom (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) scored three points over two possessions and then redshirt sophomore guard
Liz Millea (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) hit a pull-up jumper.
Following 4-0 spurts by each team, the Warriors closed within three with a 6-0 run. Powell made three free throws and then buried a three-pointer with 1:22 remaining in the half to get the Warriors within 34-31.
Zimmerman made three free throws over the final 62 seconds of the half to give the Dolphins a 37-31 at the intermission.
Le Moyne scored six of the first eight points of the third quarter to take its first double-digit lead of the game. Tooley opened the quarter with a three-pointer and Poitevien followed with a conventional three-point play at the 7:25 mark for a 43-33 lead. The Dolphins pushed their lead to 12 with back-to-back baskets in the paint by Zimmerman and Poitevien.
After Schoffstall scored five straight points to get the Warriors within 47-40 with 3:56 left in the quarter, the Dolphins scored 12 of the last 17 points in the period for a 14-point lead after three quarters. Poitevien and Tooley had conventional three-point plays around a free throw by Zimmerman before Roberts scored the final five points of the run with two free throws and a three-pointer in front of her team's bench for a 59-45 advantage.
Following spurts by each team over the opening three minutes of the fourth quarter, the Dolphins ran off 11 straight points for their largest lead of the game, 75-49, with 4:02 to play. Poitevien had five points around four from Tooley before sophomore guard
Gabriella Badway (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) finished off a feed from Zimmerman.
The Warriors scored eight points around three by Millea to pull within 78-57 at the final buzzer. Dominique Rayam and Lapotsky each had three of the points, while Jordan Hertz started the stretch with a lay-up.
Le Moyne (10-2), which has won 10 of its first 12 games for just the second time in the program's history (2000-01 was the other time), returns to Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday at #11/12 Bentley University at 5:30 p.m.
