WOMEN’S BASKETBALL KNOCKS OFF 10TH-RANKED BENTLEY, 58-40

Waltham, Mass. – Four Dolphins scored in double figures as the Le Moyne College women's basketball team upset 10th-ranked Bentley University, 58-40, in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at Barbara Stevens Court at the Dana Center.

With the victory, the Dolphins have won 11 of their first 13 games for the first time in the program's history. The Dolphins improve to 3-14 all-time at Bentley, with two of the wins coming in the last three trips to Waltham (2015 and 2019). Bentley's 40 points were its fewest since scoring 38 at Stonehill on February 9, 2008. The 40 points were also the fewest by the Falcons at home since scoring 28 against Kean near the end of the 1976-77 season.

Junior guard McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) led the four double-digit scorers with 13 points, while dishing out seven assists and posting four rebounds and four steals. Graduate student forward Corinne Poitevien (Bardonia, N.Y./Paramus Catholic (N.J.)) recorded 12 points, including 10 in the second half, and grabbed nine rebounds. Redshirt sophomore guard Liz Millea (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) tallied nine of her 11 points in the first half, while pulling down six rebounds and posting three steals. Freshman forward Jenna Zimmerman (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) scored eight of her 10 points in the first quarter, while ending the game with seven rebounds and five blocked shots.

Katie Meriggioli led the Falcons in the loss with 12 points, eight of which she scored in the second half. Amy McConnell was the only other Falcon in double digits with 11 points.

After Victoria Lux made a free throw with 6:41 left in the first quarter to give the Falcons a 7-4 lead, the Dolphins scored nine straight points and 13 of the last 16 points in the quarter. Poitevien started the run with a lay-up, Zimmerman followed with one of her own, Millea drained a three-pointer in transition and then Zimmerman made a fast-break lay-up to force a Bentley timeout.

Following a three-pointer by McConnell with 3:32 to go to end the run, Zimmerman hit a jumper and Millea made a pull-up jumper in transition to give the Dolphins a 17-10 lead after one quarter of play.

Junior forward Colleen Corcoran (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) opened the second quarter with a pair of lay-ups in the first 66 seconds to extend Le Moyne's lead to double digits for the first time.

After Bentley answered with four straight points, the Dolphins rattled off eight consecutive points. Sophomore guard Gabriella Badway (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) started the streak with a lay-up, senior guard Madison Purcell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) followed with a lay-up and then Millea made a pair of shots.

Monica Viapiano snapped the streak with a conventional three-point play, but Roberts answered with a three-pointer to give the Dolphins a 32-17 lead at halftime.

After the teams traded points to start the third quarter, the Dolphins ran off eight straight to take their largest lead of the game, 44-20, with 3:45 left in the quarter. Zimmerman, Poitevien, Millea and Purcell each scored two points in the span.

The teams alternated points over the remainder of the quarter as the Dolphins carried a 49-27 lead into the final quarter.

The Falcons opened the fourth quarter with the first seven points to trim their deficit to 15. Meriggioli made two free throws, McConnell hit a three-pointer and then Lux made two foul shots.

Le Moyne countered with five points to push its lead back to 20. Roberts registered a conventional three-point play and then Poitevien made a lay-up.

Following 5:25 of scoreless play, Le Moyne's lead was either 18 or 20 the remainder of the game.
