WOMEN’S TENNIS MOVES TO 8-0 WITH 5-2 VICTORY OVER NEW HAVEN

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College women's tennis team opened a four-match homestand with a 5-2 victory over the University of New Haven on Saturday in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Skytop Tennis Courts.
 
The Dolphins took a 1-0 lead in the match by winning the point in the doubles competition. Freshman Marta Perez (Vigo, Spain/Northside Christian School (Fla.)) and sophomore Brooke Fernandez (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) opened the match by recording a 6-1 win at the third position over Katherine MacPhail and Alexa Orlando. Stephanie Gonzalez and Kacie Banks evened doubles at one win each with a 6-2 victory over juniors Marta Nunez (Rye, N.Y./Antonio Lopez (Spain)) and Rebecca Peters (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn/Cayuga C.C.) at the second spot. Sophomore Birdem Oz (Istanbul, Turkey/TED Ankara College Foundation HS) and freshman Francesca Lilliegren (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Colegio Alemán Humboldt Guayaquil) clinched the point for the Dolphins by defeating Nicole Mika and Lilia Rodriguez at the top position, 6-3.
 
Le Moyne captured four of the six matches in the singles competition to secure the victory. At the first position, Oz was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Gonzalez to remain unbeaten in dual matches (6-0). Nunez won her fifth straight match, 7-5, 6-1, over Mika at the second spot. Lilliegren improved to 7-0 in dual matches by downing Rodriguez at the third position, 6-3, 6-2. Fernandez became the fourth Dolphin to record five conference victories with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 win at the sixth spot over Orlando. Banks earned New Haven's first point of the day with a 6-1, 0-6, 6-2 victory over Peters at the fourth position. MacPhail handed Perez her first dual-match loss of the season (7-1) with a 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 win at the fifth spot.
 
Le Moyne (8-0, 6-0 NE10), which is the only remaining unbeaten team in the NE10, continues its homestand on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at the Skytop Tennis Courts against Adelphi, which sits in a three-way tie for second place in the NE10 at 6-1.
