19TH-RANKED WOMEN’S BASKETBALL OPENS SEASON WITH 67-46 WIN OVER GOLDEY-BEACOM AT NE10/CACC CHALLENGE

Philadelphia, Pa. – Senior guard McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) scored 21 points to lead the 19th-ranked Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 67-46 season-opening win over Goldey-Beacom College on Friday night in the first game of the NE10/CACC Challenge hosted by University of the Sciences at Bobby Morgan Arena.

Roberts, who averaged 26 points per game at the East Regional at Bobby Morgan Arena in March, scored six points in the third quarter and five in each of the first, second and fourth quarters, while six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Redshirt junior guard Liz Millea (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) netted 12 of her 18 points in the second quarter, while finishing the game with four rebounds and four assists. Sophomore forward Jenna Zimmerman (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) led all players in the game with 10 rebounds, while adding nine points and a pair of blocked shots.

Brianna Seltzer led the Lightning in the setback with 13 second-half points, including nine in the fourth quarter.

After the Dolphins scored the first four points and Goldey-Beacom countered with five in a row, the Dolphins answered with seven straight points and 10 of the next 12 take control of the game. Millea started the outburst with a three-pointer and Roberts capped it with one of her own for a 14-7 lead with 2:25 left.

Following a conventional three-point play by Amanda McGrogan, Zimmerman closed out the scoring in the quarter with a lay-up to give the Dolphins a 16-10 lead after 10 minutes of play.

Le Moyne rattled off 12 of the first 14 points of the second quarter to blow the game open. Roberts scored the first five points and Millea followed with the final seven.

Millea answered a basket by the Lightning with five more points and then sophomore guard Cameron Tooley (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) countered another Lightning basket with back-to-back fast-break lay-ups to give the Dolphins a 37-16 lead at halftime.

Zimmerman and Roberts drilled back-to-back three-pointers around a lay-up by Goldey-Beacom to give the Dolphins their first 25-point lead of the game at the 7:52 mark of the third quarter.

The teams traded points over the remainder of the quarter as Le Moyne's lead bounced between 19 and 25 points and settled at 22 points after three quarters of play following a three-pointer by Roberts off a pass from Millea with 10 seconds left in the quarter.

Following a three-pointer by Seltzer with 7:59 left in the fourth quarter to get the Lightning within 56-36, the Dolphins scored 11 of the next 13 points to take their largest lead of the game, 29 points, with 3:55 to go. Sophomore forward Emma Brinker (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) started the jaunt with a put-back lay-up, Roberts followed with five points and then senior forward Colleen Corcoran (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) tallied the final four points for a 67-38 lead.

Goldey-Beacom scored the last eight points to deliver the final margin.

Le Moyne (1-0) closes out play at the NE10/CACC Challenge on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. against the host University of the Sciences, which is ranked 17th in the WBCA preseason poll. The Dolphins upset the top-seeded Devils in the NCAA East Region semifinals, 63-56, back in March.
