FOURTH-RANKED ASHLAND REGISTERS 92-77 WIN OVER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Syracuse, N.Y. – Jodi Johnson scored 18 points to lead fourth-ranked Ashland University to a 92-77 victory over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.

Sophomore forward Jenna Zimmerman (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) led Le Moyne offensively with a career high-tying 21 points, including eight in the third quarter, while adding six rebounds, three blocks and a pair of steals. Senior guard McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) tallied nine of her 15 points in the fourth quarter, while dishing out eight assists (six in the third quarter) and grabbing four rebounds. Redshirt junior guard Liz Millea (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) also scored nine points in the final quarter to finish the contest with 13. Senior forward Colleen Corcoran (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) netted eight of her 12 points in the third quarter and grabbed six rebounds (four offensive), while sophomore guard Erin Fouracre (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie Central) tallied 10 points as all five Dolphin starters scored in double digits.

Johnson, the WBCA national Player of the Year as a sophomore in 2017-18 after leading the Eagles to the national championship game for the second straight year and a 73-game winning streak, tallied 12 of her team-best point total in the first half, while grabbing a team-high seven rebounds and dishing out four assists. Annie Roshak scored at least four points in each quarter and finished with 17 off the bench on 8-of-10 shooting, while adding four offensive rebounds. Sara Loomis, the reigning Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Player of the Week, turned in 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocks, while fellow forward Karlee Pireu recorded 12 points.

After the teams split the game's first four points, the Eagles scored six in a row and 11 of the next 14 to take an eight-point lead. Johnson scored five of the points, Roshak had four and Pireu scored in the paint.

The Dolphins scored the next five points, including a three-pointer by Zimmerman, to get within 13-10, but Pireu capped the scoring in the opening quarter with a three-pointer for a 16-10 Ashland lead after 10 minutes of play.

Following four points by each team over the opening 83 seconds of the second quarter, Ashland ran off 14 of the next 18 points to open up a 34-18 lead with 4:16 left in the half. Loomis bookended the run with three-pointers, while making a free throw in the middle of the stretch.

After Sarah Hart gave the Eagles their largest lead of the half at 39-22 with a three-pointer with 1:13 left, Millea made a jumper and was fouled after landing to draw two free throws, which she converted to get the Dolphins within 13.

Loomis scored in the paint with 36 seconds left to give Ashland a 41-26 lead at halftime.

Ashland, which is 111-4 since the start of the 2016-17 season, scored seven of the first nine points in the third quarter to take its first 20-point lead of the game. Renee Stimpert made back-to-back shots in the paint and then Hallie Heidemann drilled a three-pointer with 7:33 left in the period for a 48-28 lead.

After the teams then went back and forth over the next 5:20 as Ashland's lead bounced between 15 and 20 points, Erin Daniels and Stimpert made consecutive three-pointers to put the Eagles up 66-42 with 1:01 to go.

Corcoran and Roberts scored in the paint around a lay-up by Heidemann to get the Dolphins within 68-46 after three quarters.

Following back-and-forth action over the opening three minutes of the fourth quarter, Pireu made consecutive lay-ups to give Ashland its largest lead of the game, 77-52, with 6:49 to play.

The Dolphins scored 12 of the next 17 points to get within 18 with 3:53 left. Five Dolphins scored in the span, led by three-pointers from Zimmerman and Millea.

After Ashland took its last 20-point lead of the afternoon with 1:27 left, the Dolphins scored seven of the last nine points. Roberts had five of the points around a pair of free throws by junior forward Madison Shetrom (Altoona, Pa./Altoona).
