MEN’S BASKETBALL USES SECOND-HALF RUN FOR 88-76 WIN AT ADELPHI

Garden City, N.Y. – Redshirt senior guard Malik Garner (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow/Sunrise Christian Academy/Saginaw Valley State) scored a career-high 24 points to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to an 88-76 come-from-behind win over Adelphi University on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Center for Recreation and Sport.

Garner, whose previous career high of 23 came at Southern Connecticut State on November 17, 2018, tallied 19 of his points in the second half on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. Sophomore guard Nino Hernandez (Gardner, Mass./The Winchendon School/Bryant) scored 12 of his 18 points in the first half. Graduate student guard Oshea Gairey (Toronto, Ontario/St. John's Catholic Prep (Md.)/Simon Fraser) posted nine of his 15 points in the first half and finished the game with six rebounds, while senior guard Ryan Roland (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Mercyhurst) netted nine of his 13 points in the second half.

Chris Coalman led four Panthers in double figures with 19 points, including 15 in the first half, while adding six rebounds. Spencer Foley came off the bench to go 5-of-5 from three-point range and finish with 17 points, 11 of which came in the first half. Austin Beech tallied 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Ronnie Silva had 12 points, five rebounds and five assists.

After the teams split the first eight points of the game, the Dolphins used a pair of 5-0 runs around back-to-back three-pointers by the Panthers to open up a 16-10 lead with 14:24 left in the first half. Garner and Hernandez each scored five points in the span.

Following back-and-forth action over the next almost seven minutes, during which time the Panthers tied the score twice, the Panthers closed out the half with a 16-6 run to take a 47-39 lead into halftime. Coalman and Foley each hit a pair of three-pointers in the span, Silva made a jumper and Beech had a tip-in at the buzzer to set the margin at the intermission.

The Dolphins scored the first nine points of the second half to take the lead back. Sophomore forward BB Chuks-Mady (Hamilton, Ontario/GTA Prep) scored the first four, Roland drained a three-pointer and then Garner converted a fast-break jumper in the paint for the lead with 17:53 to go.

After the lead changed sides five times over the next 2:15, Le Moyne scored nine straight points over 2:19 to take the lead for good and force an Adelphi timeout. Garner made a jumper, Gairey made consecutive lay-ups and senior forward Tom Brown (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) drained a three-pointer in transition for a 62-55 advantage with 13:19 to play.

Following a jumper by Coalman to end the run, Le Moyne pushed its lead into double digits for the first time on a jumper by Roland and a four-point play by Garner with 11:44 to go for a 68-57 lead.

After the teams traded points over the next three minutes, the Dolphins rattled off 13 of the next 15 points to take a 20-point lead with 3:24 remaining. Roland had four of the points, Garner hit a three-pointer and Gairey, Hernandez and Brown each had two points in the span as the Dolphins took an 86-66 lead.

Adelphi scored 10 of the last 12 points to deliver the final score.

Le Moyne (5-4, 3-0 NE10), which has won four straight games at Adelphi, returns home to host Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
