Pleasantville, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College men's basketball team jumped out to a 21-2 lead en route to a 74-52 win over Pace University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday night at the Goldstein Fitness Center.
Junior forward
Kobi Nwandu (York, Pa./Northeastern York/East Stroudsburg) led three Dolphins in double figures with 20 points, including 15 in the second half, while adding four rebounds and three assists. Junior guard
Ryan Roland (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Mercyhurst) netted 10 of his 17 points in the first half. Senior forward
C.J. Asuncion-Byrd (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich/St. Thomas More/Gannon) recorded seven of his 14 points in each half, while grabbing a team-high six rebounds. Redshirt junior guard
Oshea Gairey (Toronto, Ontario/St. John's Catholic Prep (Md.)/Simon Fraser) recorded six points, seven assists and six rebounds.
Peyton Wejnert led the Setters in the loss with 14 points, while adding four rebounds. Greg Poleon tallied 13 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
The Dolphins scored the game's first seven points and 21 of the first 23. Freshman forward
BB Chuks-Mady (Hamilton, Ontario/GTA Prep) bookended the run with lay-ups, while Roland scored 10 of the points in the opening 8:45.
Gairey put the Dolphins up by 20 points for the first time with a three-pointer with 9:24 left in the half for a 24-4 lead.
Following a fast-break lay-up by Wejnert to get the Setters within 34-15 with 2:35 left in the half, the Dolphins scored the final six points to take a 40-15 lead into halftime. Asuncion-Byrd recorded a conventional three-point play and then junior guard
Malik Garner (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow/Sunrise Christian Academy/Saginaw Valley State) drained a three-pointer.
After back-and-forth action over the opening six minutes of the second half, in which Le Moyne's lead bounced between 23 and 28 points, Nwandu gave the Dolphins their largest lead of the game, 53-24, with a three-pointer with 13:21 to play.
Pace countered with 14 of the next 18 points to get within 19 with 9:41 to go. Five Setters scored in the stretch, with Tyrone Cohen, Jr., Austin Gilbertson and Brandon Jacobs each connecting from three-point range.
After Le Moyne's lead was between 19 and 22 over the next four minutes, Asuncion-Byrd buried a three-pointer to make it 65-41 with 5:09 to go.
The Setters got within 20 again with 3:52 left, but Roland scored four points and junior guard
Zay Jennings (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic/Caldwell) hit a three-pointer around a Poleon dunk for a 25-point lead with 82 seconds to play.
Le Moyne (15-8, 12-6 NE10), which is ranked fifth in the first NCAA East Region rankings of the year, concludes its home schedule on Saturday against The College of Saint Rose at 3:00 p.m. Prior to the opening tipoff, Asuncion-Byrd and
