Taunton, Mass. – Second baseman/designated hitter William Kelleher had three hits and scored in both games to lead Stonehill College to a sweep of the Le Moyne College baseball team in Northeast-10 Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Taunton High School. The Skyhawks won the first game, 4-3, and took the nightcap, 2-0.
The Skyhawks got the scoring started with a run on two hits in the first inning. Shortstop Matthew Rocco led off with a single through the right side and advanced to third on a single down the right field line Kelleher. After a walk to load the bases and a strikeout, center fielder Rob Duarte grounded out to third base to knock in Rocco.
Le Moyne evened the score at one apiece in the bottom of the second. Sophomore right fielder
Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) singled to left with one out and moved to third back-to-back walks. After a pitching change, junior center fielder
Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) grounded out to drive in Smith.
Stonehill regained the lead with two runs on one hit and one error in the third inning. Kelleher walked to start the frame and first baseman Harrison Sabo followed with a single to center. Kelleher then scored as Duarte reached on an error by the shortstop. Left fielder Shane O'Halloran followed with a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Sabo.
The Dolphins answered with two runs on three hits and one Stonehill in the bottom of the score to knot the score again. Redshirt senior first baseman
Andrew Taft (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton/Buffalo) reached on a throwing error by the shortstop with one out, moved to second on a single to center by senior designated hitter
Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) and took third on a fly out. Smith then singled to center to plate Taft. After a single to load the bases, freshman second baseman
Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) walked to force in Place.
The Skyhawks took the lead for good with a run on three hits in the top of the fourth. Rocco doubled to center with two outs, took third on a single by Kelleher and scored on a single to the pitcher by Sabo.
The Dolphins advanced the tying run to second base with no outs in the seventh inning, but were unable to plate the tying run.
Sophomore righty
Ryan Murphy (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) took the loss after yielding four runs (three earned) on eight hits over seven innings, while striking out nine. Brendan Powicki earned his first win of the season after striking out two over two scoreless innings, while allowing just one hit. Michael Young picked up his first save by tossing a scoreless seventh inning.
The Skyhawks scored the only runs they would need in the nightcap in the first inning on four hits. Kelleher doubled down the left field line with one out, moved to third on a groundout and raced home on a wild pitch. Third baseman Aidan Wilde followed with a single to left, advanced to third on a single down the right field line by Duarte and scored on a single up the middle by O'Halloran.
The Dolphins advanced a runner to third in the third, fourth and seventh innings, but were unable to plate a run.
Senior
Sam Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) suffered the loss after yielding two runs and five hits over seven innings, while striking out six. Freshman shortstop
Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) recorded three of Le Moyne's nine hits in the game. Michael White earned the win after throwing four scoreless innings, while striking out three. Matt Smith picked up his second save after tossing a scoreless seventh inning.
Le Moyne (7-13, 0-2 NE10), which has lost six straight games, opens NE10 Southwest Division play on Wednesday at The College of Saint Rose at 3:30 p.m.
