Pleasantville, N.Y. – Senior catcher/third baseman
Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) drove in two runs to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 5-3 win over Pace University in the second game of a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Finnerty Field. The Setters edged the Dolphins in the opener, 2-1.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins scored four times in the second inning via three hits and two Pace errors. Sophomore left fielder
Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) and junior center fielder
Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) opened the frame with singles. Smith then scored on an error by the pitcher as sophomore designated hitter
Jeff Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Odyssey) reached on a fielder's choice. Following a single back to the pitcher by sophomore catcher
Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) to load the bases, redshirt sophomore second baseman
Brian O'Mara (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) reached on catcher's interference, which forced home Tuey. After Wilson was retired at home on a groundout, Spinoso lifted a sacrifice fly to right to knock in Fureno. O'Mara then scored the fourth run of the inning as freshman shortstop
Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) advanced to second base.
Pace got one run back in the bottom of the second. First baseman Brian Bohlander and third baseman Dean DePreta reached on singles with one out. After a strikeout and a single by center fielder Matt Bass to load the bases, shortstop Noah Clement was hit by a pitch to force in Bohlander.
The Setters scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to get within 4-2. Bass was hit by a pitch to start the frame, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, took third on a single by second baseman Michael Salmonese and scored on a groundout by left fielder Joseph Curcio.
The Dolphins pushed their lead back to three with a run on two hits in the seventh. Fureno reached on an error by the shortstop to begin in the inning. After an out, Nevins doubled to left center to move Fureno to third. Spinoso then singled through the left side to drive in Fureno.
Pace scored once in the bottom of the seventh, but left the potential tying run stranded at second. Bass and Clement started the frame with singles. Following an out, Curcio singled to center to knock in Bass. The next two batters were retired to end the inning.
Sophomore righty
Ryan Murphy (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) struck out 10 over seven innings, while yielding three runs and nine hits, to earn his second win of the season. Freshman
Jacob Maser (Chittenango, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) picked up his third save of the season after retiring six of the eight batters he faced over the final two innings, while striking out two. Thomas Ippolito took the loss for the Setters after allowing five runs (all unearned) over seven innings, while striking out seven.
Following three and a half scoreless innings to start the first game of the day, the Setters got on the scoreboard. DePreta singled to the shortstop with two outs, stole second and came around to score on a single through the left side by Bohlander.
Le Moyne evened the score at one apiece in the top of the seventh inning. Smith led off with a triple to right field and raced home on a sacrifice fly to right by Tuey.
The Setters plated the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth. Curcio led off with a single to left, moved to second on a hit batsman and took third on a sacrifice bunt. DePreta then lifted a sac fly to center to drive in Curcio.
Sophomore
Sam Byrns (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane) took the loss after yielding one run over one and two-thirds innings out of the bullpen. Smith recorded two of the team's four hits in the game. Lorenzo Russo earned the win with two hitless innings on the mound.
Le Moyne (8-15, 1-4 NE10, 1-2 SW), which snapped an eight-game losing streak with the game two win, wraps up the three-game series with the Setters on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
