Pleasantville, N.Y. – Center fielder Matt Bass drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning as Pace University recorded a 10-6 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action on Sunday afternoon at Finnerty Field.
The Setters started the scoring with two runs in the first inning without getting a hit. Second baseman Michael Salmonese drew a walk to start the frame and advanced to second on a balk. After an out and back-to-back walks to load the bases, Salmonese raced home on a wild pitch. First baseman Brian Bohlander then recorded a sacrifice fly to center to drive in right fielder Luke Jacobi.
Le Moyne answered with three runs on four hits in the second to take the lead. Redshirt senior first baseman
Andrew Taft (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton/Buffalo) led off with a single, but was retired at second as freshman shortstop
Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) reached on a fielder's choice. After a single by junior third baseman
Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and a walk by junior center fielder
Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) to load the bases, sophomore catcher
Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) singled down the left field line to drive in Nevins and Jacques. Redshirt sophomore second baseman
Brian O'Mara (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) followed with a single up the middle to plate Tuey.
Pace countered with a three-run inning of its own in the bottom of the second. Designated hitter Joseph Curcio walked to open the inning, stole second, advanced to third on a single by left fielder Alex Pia and scored on an error by the first baseman. Following another error and two outs, Pia scored from third on a wild pitch. Jacobi followed with a single to left center to knock in Bass.
Le Moyne answered with another three-run frame in the top of the third. After senior designated hitter
Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) singled up the middle to start the frame, Taft blasted a home run to right center. Nevins followed with a double to right center, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a groundout by Tuey.
Pace knotted the score at six apiece in the bottom of the fourth. Salmonese walked to start the inning, advanced to second on a balk and came around to score on a single through the left side by shortstop Noah Clement.
The Setters took the lead for good in the fifth. Pia doubled to lead field with two outs and scored as Bass followed with a single to center.
Pace pushed across three runs in the seventh inning. With one out, Pia walked, Bass singled and Salmonese singled to load the bases. Pia then scored on a throwing error by the second baseman, which allowed Bass to race home also. Following a strikeout for the second out of the inning, catcher Michael Barbato singled to left to knock in Salmonese with the game's final run.
Freshman
Ryan DuBord (Old Saybrook, Conn./Old Saybrook) took the loss out of the bullpen after yielding one run over two innings, while striking out two. Spinoso finished with three of Le Moyne's 10 hits, while Taft added two. Michael Roll collected the win after tossing five scoreless innings of relief, while posting four strikeouts.
Le Moyne (8-16, 1-5 NE10, 1-3 SW) concludes its road non-conference schedule on Wednesday with a doubleheader at Mansfield University at 1:00 p.m.
