BASEBALL SWEEPS NON-CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER AT MANSFIELD, 11-5, 17-8

Mansfield, Pa. – Junior center fielder Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) went 7-for-8 and scored five runs to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Mansfield University on Wednesday afternoon at Shaute Field. The Dolphins won the opener, 11-5, and took the nightcap, 17-8.

The Dolphins jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opening game. With two outs in the first inning, senior catcher/designated hitter Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) and redshirt senior first baseman Andrew Taft (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton/Buffalo) smacked back-to-back solo home runs.

Le Moyne used the long ball again in the second to score two runs. Following a single to the second baseman by Tuey to start the frame, senior left fielder David DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) homered to right center.

The Dolphins scored three times in the fourth on three hits. Redshirt sophomore second baseman Brian O'Mara (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) launched a home run to left center with one out. After freshman shortstop Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) walked and Taft singled around an out, sophomore right fielder Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) doubled to right center to knock in Nevins and Taft.

Mansfield got on the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom of the fourth on two hits. Shortstop Josh Kulina led off with a single to center, moved to second on a groundout and advanced to third on the second of back-to-back walks to load the bases. First baseman Dom Lopez then grounded out to the second baseman to plate Kulina. After another walk and a pitching change, right fielder Jake Haas singled to drive in second baseman Brady Mengel.

The Mounties scored once in the fifth on two hits. Center fielder Koty Fitzgerald doubled down the right field line to open the frame. Following a pair of outs, designated hitter Tyler Guidos singled to right to knock in Fitzgerald.

The Dolphins pushed their lead back to six with two runs in the sixth. After Spinoso walked with one out, Taft blasted his eighth home run of the season over the fence in left center. The home run marks the 25th of his Dolphin career, which ties him for fifth in the program's history.

Le Moyne scored twice more in the seventh inning. Tuey led off with a single to left and O'Mara walked with one out. Nevins then singled to left to knock in Tuey. Following a walk by Spinoso and an out, Smith walked to force in O'Mara.

Mansfield used three hits to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Kulina singled with two outs, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a double to left by Guidos. Mengel then singled to center to drive in pinch-runner Colin Treaster.

Sophomore Sam Byrns (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane) earned the win out of the bullpen after tossing the final three and one-third innings, while striking out two. Tuey and Taft each had three hits in the game, while Smith posted two hits. Timmy Saar took the loss for the Mounties after giving up four runs over one and two-thirds innings.

In the nightcap, the Mountaineers scored three times in the first inning. Third baseman Brittain Shander, Kulina and Guidos opened the frame with consecutive singles to load the bases. Shander then raced home on a wild pitch. Mengel followed with a sacrifice fly to right to knock in Kulina. Eric Senior recorded a sac fly of his own to plate Guidos.

The Dolphins evened the score at three in the top of the second. Tuey singled with one out and moved to third as freshman third baseman Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) was hit by a pitch and sophomore catcher Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) walked to load the bases. O'Mara followed with a single to left to drive in Tuey and Carroll. Nevins then singled to right to knock in Fureno.

Mansfield took the lead back in the bottom of the second on a hit and two Le Moyne errors. Haas reached on an error by the second baseman with one out and Fitzgerald followed with a bunt single. Haas then scored on a wild pitch.

Le Moyne plated seven runs on six hits in the third inning to take the lead for good. After Taft and Tuey singled around an out, DiNorcia singled to left to knock in Taft. Following a walk by Carroll to load the bases and a pitching change, Tuey scored on a groundout by Fureno. After O'Mara walked to load the bases again, Nevins drilled a grand slam to right for a 9-4 lead. Spinoso then doubled down the left field line and came around to score on a double by Taft.

O'Mara gave the Dolphins an 11-4 lead in the fifth with a homer to center to open the frame.

Mansfield scored twice in the bottom of the fifth on three hits. Fitzgerald singled and Shander doubled to open the inning. Two batters later, Guidos doubled down the left field line to knock in Fitzgerald and Shander.

The Dolphins got one run back in the sixth on three hits. With one out, Tuey singled, moved to second on a single by DiNorcia and scored on a single by Carroll.

Le Moyne scored five times in the top of the seventh with one hit and one Mansfield error. Spinoso, Taft and Smith drew consecutive walks to start the inning. Following a pitching change, Tuey lifted a sac fly to center to drive in Spinoso. After DiNorcia reached on an error to load the bases, Carroll walked on four pitches to force in Taft. Smith then scored on a wild pitch. Fureno followed with a sac fly to right to drive in DiNorcia, while Carroll scored on a single by O'Mara.

Mansfield completed the day's scoring with two runs without getting a hit. Treaster and Guidos drew walks with one out. After Senior was hit by a pitch with two outs to load the bases, catcher Cole Shomper walked to force in Treaster. First baseman Glen Addicott then walked to knock in Guidos.

Redshirt senior Max Tessitore (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) earned his first win of the season after tossing the first four innings and striking out two, while yielding four runs (three earned). Tuey went 4-for-4 in the contest and scored three times, while O'Mara had three hits and four RBI and Nevins (five RBI), Taft and DiNorcia each had two hits. Billy Gregory took the loss after giving up seven runs in two and one-third innings of work.
 
Le Moyne (10-16) returns to Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Franklin Pierce University at 12:00 p.m.
