BASEBALL HANDS FRANKLIN PIERCE FIRST HOME DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP IN 11 YEARS, 16-12, 8-1

Rindge, N.H. – Redshirt senior first baseman Andrew Taft (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton/Buffalo) had four hits in the opener and sophomore righty Ryan Murphy (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) tossed a complete game in the nightcap to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday at Pappas Field. The Dolphins won the opener, 16-12, and posted an 8-1 victory in game two.

The Ravens were swept at home in a doubleheader for the first time since April 21, 2008 and for just the third time in the 15-year history of Pappas Field (80 all-time doubleheaders).

Franklin Pierce opened the day's scoring with two runs in the first inning. After shortstop James Boria and left fielder Brad Roberto singled with one out, catcher Ural Forbes singled to right field to drive in Boria. Following a line out, designated hitter Josh Tower singled up the middle to knock in Roberto.

The Dolphins evened the score at two apiece in the top of the second. After sophomore right fielder Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) walked with one out, junior third baseman Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) blasted a home run to right field.

Le Moyne exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning on five hits and one error. Senior catcher/designated hitter Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) walked and Taft followed with a single to right center to start the inning. After Smith reached on a bunt single to load the bases, Jacques lifted a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Spinoso with the go-ahead run. Following a walk by junior center fielder Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) to load the bases again, sophomore designated hitter/left fielder Nick Spinella (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) reached on catcher's interference, which forced in Taft. Senior left fielder David DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) was then walked to force in Smith. Redshirt sophomore second baseman Brian O'Mara (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) followed with a double to left center to plate Tuey and Spinella. After a pitching change, freshman shortstop Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) doubled down the right field line to knock in DiNorcia and O'Mara. Following the inning's second out, Taft doubled to right center to drive in Nevins with the final run of the frame.

The Ravens got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Right fielder/center fielder Ricky Perry drew a walk to start the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch with two outs. Forbes then doubled down the left field line to knock in Perry. First baseman Jonel Ozuna followed with a single down the right field line to bring around Forbes.

The Dolphins extended their lead to 13-4 with three runs in the seventh inning on two hits. DiNorcia walked to start the frame, stole second and moved to third on a fly out. Nevins then doubled to right center to knock in DiNorcia. Following a fly out, Taft launched his conference-best ninth home run of the season to the right-center power alley.

Franklin Pierce countered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Perry reached on a dropped fly ball and Boria singled through the left side to start the inning. Following a groundout and a walk by Forbes to load the bases, Ozuna doubled down the left field line to drive in Perry and Roberto.

The Ravens pushed across three runs on three hits in the eighth to get within 13-9. Second baseman Carmine Giordano led off with a single to left and pinch-hitter/right fielder John Mead followed with a single to right. After Perry was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Boria lifted a sacrifice fly to left center to knock in Giordano. Roberto followed with a single through the right side to plate Mead. Perry then scored on a sac fly to center by Forbes.

Le Moyne scored three times in the ninth to complete its scoring. Spinoso doubled to right center with one out and then Taft was intentionally walked. Spinoso then scored on a throwing error by the shortstop after Taft was retired at second base. Jacques followed with a double to right to plate Smith, while coming around to score on a double to right center by Tuey.

Franklin Pierce plated three runs in the ninth to get within four, but could not get any closer. After third baseman Jake Miller was hit by a pitch and Giordano singled with one out, Mead homered to right field.

Senior Sam Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) earned his third win of the season after striking out six over five innings, while yielding four runs and eight hits. Sophomore Sam Byrns (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane) picked up his third save of the came after recording the final 12 outs of the game, including four via strikes. In addition to Taft's four-hit performance, Jacques had three hits and O'Mara and Nevins each had two hits. Danny Gracia took the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) and five hits over two and one-third innings.

In the nightcap, the Dolphins scored first with a run in the second inning. Taft led off with a single to right, moved to second on an error by the second baseman, took third on a walk by Jacques and scored on a groundout by Tuey.

Franklin Pierce evened the score at one in the bottom of the fourth. Roberto doubled down the left field line with one out, took third on a single by Forbes and scored on a single through the right side by Ozuna.

Le Moyne regained the lead in the fifth with one run without a hit. With one out, O'Mara, Nevins and Spinoso drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Taft was then hit by a1n 0-2 pitch to force in O'Mara with the go-ahead run.

The Dolphins pushed across five runs in the eighth inning on three hits. Taft walked and Smith singled to center to start the inning. After an out and a walk by Tuey to load the bases, pinch-hitter Spinella walked to force in Taft. Sophomore catcher Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) was hit by the next pitch to force in Smith. O'Mara then singled to center to knock in Tuey and force a pitching change. Nevins followed with a single to left field to drive in Spinella and Fureno.

Le Moyne finished off the scoring with a run in the ninth. Smith doubled over the fence in right center to start the frame, moved to third on a fly out and scored on a wild pitch.

Murphy struck out 10 in his NE10-best fourth complete game of the season, while yielding just the one run and four hits. Nevins and Smith each recorded two hits in the contest. Ryan Covelle took the loss after giving up two runs (one earned) in four and two-thirds innings, while striking out five.
