Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) drove in three runs to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 9-2 win over seventh-ranked Southern New Hampshire University in the second game of the Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Penmen Field. The Penmen edged the Dolphins in the opener, 2-1.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins tallied five runs in the first inning. Freshman shortstop
Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) walked with one out, moved to second on a single to center by senior catcher/third baseman
Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) and took third as redshirt senior first baseman
Andrew Taft (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton/Buffalo) singled to left to load the bases. Tuey then singled to the right side of the infield to drive in Nevins and Spinoso. After an intentional walk to freshman designated hitter
Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis HS) to load the bases again and a pitching change, senior left fielder
David DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) doubled to left center to plate Taft and Tuey. Syta then scored from third as sophomore designated hitter/right fielder
Nick Spinella (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) grounded out.
Le Moyne added a run in the second without needing a hit. Redshirt sophomore second baseman
Brian O'Mara (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) walked to open the frame, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Spinoso.
The Penmen got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. Second baseman Joshua Goldstein walked with one out and left fielder Alex Kennedy was hit by a pitch with two outs. Designated hitter Dylan Faircloth then singled to right center to drive in Goldstein.
Southern New Hampshire scored again in the fourth without getting a hit. Third baseman/first baseman Sean Doherty walked to open the inning, took second on a sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by center fielder Idelson Taveras.
Le Moyne pushed its lead back to six runs with a pair in the fifth on three hits. Nevins led off with a single through the right side, advanced to third on a single to right center by Spinoso and scored on a single through the right side by Taft. After a pitching change and a wild pitch, Spinoso scored on a sac fly to left by Tuey.
The Dolphins completed the game's scoring with a run in the sixth. Spinella reached first on a wild pitch to start the frame and then stole second. After a walk and a sacrifice bunt, Nevins grounded out to second to drive in Spinella.
Redshirt senior
Max Tessitore (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) earned the win out of the bullpen after tossing four innings, while yielding just one hit and one run. Tuey, Spinoso and Taft each recorded two hits in the game. Brian Eddy suffered the loss after five of the six batters he faced came around to score.
Following three and one-half scoreless innings to start the first game, the Penmen scored in the bottom of the fourth. First baseman Phoenix Hernandez drew a walk to start the frame and stole second with two outs and took third on a throwing error by the catcher. Hernandez then scored on a wild pitch.
Southern New Hampshire scored the eventual winning run in the bottom of the fifth, again without getting a hit. Left fielder Jake Coro was hit by a pitch and Faircloth walked to start the inning. After moving to third on a fly out, Coro scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Doherty.
Le Moyne broke through with a run on two hits in the sixth. O'Mara led off with a single, stole second and came around to score on a single through the right side by Nevins.
The Dolphins got the tying run into scoring position in the ninth, but the next batter was retired to end the game.
Sophomore southpaw
Joe Vail (Cromwell, Conn./Xavier) took the loss after yielding two runs (one earned) and just one hit over five innings, while striking out three. Nevins and Spinella each tallied two hits for the Dolphins. Jake Walkinshaw improved to 5-0 on the season after going the distance and striking out 13, while allowing just the one run and seven hits.
Le Moyne (13-17, 4-6 NE10) opens its home slate on Wednesday against The College of Saint Rose at 3:00 p.m.
